The Surefire 60-round AR Magazine

Although it appears that AR-type firearms as well as magazines seem to be in much better supply than just a couple months ago, magazine such as the Surefire 60 60-rd capacity remain in very high demand.

I managed to acquire two samples for testing. With the higher prices on .223 and 5.56 ammunition – testing was limited  to one Surefire 60 magazine and 300 rounds of ammunition.

Let’s cut to the chase: The magazine, ammunition, and firearm performed flawlessly. I was using a newly purchased Bushmaster carbine and the ammunition was a combination of Remington green box 55 grain .223 rounds and Tula steel cased. No issues, no bobbles of any kind.

I expected the Surefire to be very difficult to load, but t wasn’t that bad at all. I found about 20 rounds in it did get tough, then it eased back up.

I was concerned about that quantity of rounds being pushed up against aluminum feed lips. Would the force bend the lips or would the magazine seems be weak. I was pleased to see that the magazine was reinforced on the seams and saw no deflection with the feed lips at all.

Why are these in such high demand? Well – can you say “combat multiplier“? Being able to grab your carbine and enter a situation with 60 rounds WITHOUT having to reload – that is valuable.

300 rounds is not a torture test by any means – but it s an indication.

Look for an update when I have more data. So far – impressed.

  1. Good to hear your impression of these is solid. I wouldn’t mind getting a couple of those but even the pre panic prices were too high to justify it given our stash of 30 rounders. Maybe when things calm down and they have been out for awhile the price will slip down some.

  2. I’m not crazy about the aluminum feed lips but I do like the idea of the 60 round capacity. Are these actually available for purchase or will they be phantoms like the HCMAGS 10/22 mags. I’m still waiting on my order for those. I had to have my CC company go after them to return my money since they charged my card while having nothing to ship.

  3. GUARANTEED THAT I CAN FIRE AND RELOAD TWO 30 RD MAGS ONE SEC. TO 1 1/2 SEC SLOWER THAN USING A 60 RD.60 RD MAGS WOULD BE EXCELLANT ON AN AR W/TRIPOD AT A STATIONARY HOLDUP,BUT ON THE RELOCATION 30 RD MAGS. IN MY OPINION WOULD BE EASIER TO HUMP OUT WITH AND NOT NEARLY AS BULKY.JUST MY ASSESSESTMENT OF A SCENARIO.THANKS GENE

  4. It is my experience that anything made by Surefire will be an excellent product. Their headlamps and flashlights are superb as are their suppressors. Having so said, I’ve not purchased the Surefire 60 round magazine simply due to its bulk. It wont fit the magazine pockets on my plate carrier and it is long. In these days of ‘more is better’ there is still a place for the venerable 20 round magazine.

  5. I have both a 60 round and a 100 round Surefire magazine. I have not had any trouble with either one. They both load easily with stripper clips and a guide.
I have not heard of a 300 round magazine. That would get pretty darn heavy!!

  6. Steve;
That was 300 ROUNDS of amunition, NOT a 300 round magazine! I had to look back to see what is was that you were talking about. Glad you are happy with the mags. D.

  8. All –

True that these magazines have drawbacks such as getting prone – which 30-rd magazines can make difficult as well, and they do not fit well in any magazine pouches – they do serve to fill a niche.

So far – they are working well.

  9. And the gold star goes to whoever comes up with a bandoleer or mag pouch which will hold these beasts.

I shoot an M1A with Israeli 25-round mags. I doubt anyone plans to create larger mags for them, but I’ll pass on adding another 2 or 3 pounds of ammo onto my rifle.
