From the Desk of John Rourke – February 13th, 2015

I am not superstitious so the fact it is the 13th and a Friday means nothing. I think I will go out and walk under a ladder, break a mirror, and have a few black cats cross in front of me. If I feel really wild I will try to walk and chew bubble gum at the same time. Am I the man or what?

Just ordered another set of glasses from Zenni Optical. Have had good luck with them. Glasses can be very expensive and being able to afford spares for some is just not realistic. Good service and good quality.

This weekend I will be AFK(away from keyboard) so any issues with the site, responding to emails, comments, etc. will likely be delayed.

Last summer I went to a KOA Campground in Myrtle Beach, SC. While there I saw all kinds f RV’s, tents, and pop-ups. The most interesting was an enclosed trailer – about 8 foot long – converted into a sleeping cabin. I would go buy and see an older couple sitting at the back of the trailer under a large tarp. The doors would be open and I could see wall-mounted light, cots against the wall, blankets, etc. Under the tarp with the couple was an area set up for cooking and eating.

Pretty cool.

  1. Ukraine would not be an issue, had not the Obama administration not pulled a regime change on a dully elected government. Problem was that the election didn’t turn out the way they wanted. The reality is they want Ukraine for it’s strategic value much like they did with the nation of Hawaii, of which they were on friendly terms with at the time bu that’s a different story. Which is why the country is being raped of its resources by the west.

  2. I haven’t tried Zenni Optical but I have used and found that the prices are amazing (prescription glasses for $12 per pair delivered) and I’ve noticed that my spares from them seem to be clearer than the prescription pair I bought at my local Walmart. Certainly good to have spares in your BOB and elsewhere if you need glasses.

    Keep up the great site.

  3. Thanks for pointing out the Zenni! Never heard of them before. If I can figure it out, I may give them a try. The frames I like are $9.99!!

I will give a look, as well. Thanks for that find, Myke.

  4. Here’s another vote for Zenni. I just had my prescription changed and ordered from them for the second time. My eyes are old and I require bifocals, got titanium frames with no line bifocals in polycarbonate (to resist scratches) with protective coating on top of that and clip-on sunglasses for $168.40 shipped. BTW that was for two pair. The fit was fine and the lenses appear perfect, I’ve been wearing them for 2 weeks.
So as a prepper, I have an extra pair of glasses with sunglasses for a total of less that I could get one pair locally. Cannot beat this deal.

  5. Rourke and everyone -please let us know how this winter storm affects you.Friends in Va have lost power and they will be 20 tonight.
We have never heard the weather forecasters warning that here in the NE the storm will be” dangerous and life threatening” .It s 6 now and windchills will be minus 30 tonight. Possible windchills of minus 50 from the Dakotas to Maine.
Filling up a thermos with hot water ahead of time helps if you want tea/coffee and your power fails. We are grateful to have the wood stoves and the back up gas stove and the generator .
Hope you are all safe and warm. Arlene
