A few random thoughts………..

A few things on my mind……

  • No news today – Valerie is on vacation.

  • Thinking recently about perimeter alarms. In a grid down situation I need to be able to monitor all sides of my house if I remain bugged in. I am working on a “tripwire” type system is pretty simple. The squirrels love to run along the top of the fence so that may interfere with the tripwire deal. I will write up a post once I have the first prototype finished.

  • My recent rant – I am human and my recent rant is likely proof of that. I really should not have expressed myself like that as the reality is that my frustrations had nothing to do with my readers. I rarely express negativity in my personal life unless it is necessary to deal with a situation.
  • Some of you know I am involved in martial arts – specifically stickfighting right now. I have been taking stickfighting since 2003 and am planning to test for Qualified Instructor in September. Having to come up with 21 Advanced Self Defense Techniques for the test and demonstrate in from of a board of Instructors. Ugggghhhhh.
  • This looks to be a very hot summer. Here in South Carolina the winter was warmer than usual and the spring as well. The southern sun can be hard on a garden. I just planed a second round of cucumbers and summer squash.
  • Anyone know of a cheap and simple irrigation system for a plant that is away from main irrigation methods? I have some squash that I planted and they are out of sight (and often out of mind). The first plants I put in there burnt up in the sun. I jut placed another pair and was trying to come up with something to provide a slow but constant “drip” for the plants. Any help would be appreciated.
  • Got my 13 year old son into Crossfit Teens. He has played football for years and wrestled this past year. In just a few weeks he is seeing a change to his physique as a result of the workouts.
  • Anybody ever seen Bigfoot? Just curious.
  • I am not very excited about the upcoming election in November. I certainly do not want Obama to be reelected however I do not look to Romney as anything special – just the lesser of two evils. Regardless of who gets in the deficit will continue to grow and the economy will inch its way closer to a collapse.  Sad.
Take care all –

  1. As far as irrigating a plant slowly…I don’t know how many you have, if it’s just a few this would work. My husband drilled a small hole in a couple of 5 gal. bucket, fills them with water and sets them beside a plant that needs water. We’ve been doing this a lot recently because of our drought.

  2. Some years back my brother n law had five acres and a little home with about 7 yappy little dogs that he kind of adopted. They lived outdoors year round. You could not get within 100 yards of the property, never mind the house, without all seven dogs running out and yapping away at you. Day or night the best alarm system I have ever seen.

  3. Why do we HAVE to pick evil in November? Either vote for a third party or write in Ron Paul. At least your conscience is clear. People are always saying, “You’re throwing away your vote.” Well, if you vote for the loser, either Tweedle Dee or Tweedle Dum, haven’t you thrown your vote away? If more people would throw their vote at somebody, anybody but the psychopaths they keep propping up for us, we might have a chance of making meaningful change.

    • Pam –

I agree with what you are saying. Unfortunately there is a lack of collective thinking on a 3rd party and the reality is – whether we like it or not – that the 3rd party WILL take votes away from that party which is opposite Obama. Yes – if everyone that voted Republican went for the 3rd party they would win – but that is a long ways away from happening. It is sad the average voter today does not look at the issues and the candidate for what they have done and will do.

      Thanks – Rourke

  4. For remote irrigation I use a somewhat labor intensive solution for my fruit trees. Drill two or three 1/8″ hole in the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket. Fill it up and walk like hell to get out there before too much water leaks out. Actually, you can cover them with your fingers depending on how / where you space the holes. Hope you find something that works for you.

  5. Good ideas on the irrigation. Don’t apologize for having a rant from time to time. Stickfighting instructor seems pretty cool. As for bigfoot, I agree with Mitch Hedberg: “I think bigfoot is just fuzzy; people are taking great pictures, there is just a big out of focus monster out there somewhere. This is very scary.”

  6. Pam,

A third party vote or a write in vote in this election will basically be a vote for Obama. Is that what you really want. I didn’t think so.

  7. Water well around the plant. Surround base of plant with BLACK plastic, at least 3 to 4 feet circumference. Much like a solar well the evaporation will drip back to the ground. Rewater occasionally.

  8. If you want Obama reelected then vote for Ron Paul. If you wanted Clinton you voted for Perot. Are we so stupid we will fall for this again?

  9. I know this sounds rediculous but as old as I am I wonder what really would happen in this country if NO ONE voted, impossible I know, it is JUST A THOUGHT. Do you think all these people would finally get it. Please understand it is a thougt only. It would be incredible to see their expressions. It just seems no one in any position really cares and yet for the most part no one seems to know how to fix it. I understand the water for Las Vegas is the worst in the nation. So, who really cares.(Lake Mead) It all seems to be left up to us on an individual basis to STAY IN SURVIVAL MODE. Since I have been unemployed for over a year it does not cease to amaze me when they say all is improving in Las Vegas. It is not improving I plan on relocating as soon as I can. Hopefully back east. Thank you for all you do for us I for one can only say a simple THANK YOU and GOD BLESS keep up the good work and thank God for your blessings.

  10. Self-Watering Planter From Porous Earthenware

Industrial designer Joey Roth developed a self-watering planter for use indoors or out. It is made from porous unglazed earthenware:

“Soil and plants are placed in the outer donut-shaped chamber, and the center chamber is filled with water. The unglazed terracotta’s natural porosity allows the water to move from the center chamber and into the soil, based on the soil’s moisture (and thus the plant’s need for water). The terracotta wall both regulates and filters the water. A simple lid on the top of the water chamber prevents evaporation.”

The design is based on the Olla, a terracotta pot for irrigation that has been in use for 4,000 years.
