  1. Also consider putting up a few older used bikes for later barter or trade during hard times. Yard sales are a great place to pickup a few bikes very cheaply. Coat the working parts liberally with oil or a preservative coating and store out in the barn or shed. I have a few coated with spray wax preservative for metal I found at the hardware store and then wrapped in large plastic leaf bags to prevent rust from the humidity. You can research and save plans now for converting these bikes to all sorts of mechanical uses later on such as generators, pumps, mills, etc…

  2. Probably your best utility for a bike is to carry your gear. If you take off the seat and add a tiller handle and pole you can haul hundreds of pounds of equipment. This is especially useful if you’re out of shape and need to make it to a campsite in one trip.
