The garden is providing…..

Just a quick note and a few pictures showing my garden has just started providing for my family……

survival garden, preparedness, food storage, SHTF, TEOTWAWKI, homesteading
My main garden surrounded by several raised beds.

Yellow Crookneck Summer Squash
Peppers..... usually not one of my most successful crops.
Delicious Strawberries......
Zucchinis
Cucumber just starting to form......my favorite.
Tomatoes......
Lots of green beans............

Those that have been hanging around here at MSOnline for awhile know I really recommend developing gardening skills. Being able to supplement foods stored “just in case” with fresh fruits and vegetables is essential. An amazing amount of food can be grown within a small lot with proper soil management, crop rotation and watering frequency.

For any preparedness-mind person – gardening needs to be done NOW rather than when you must do it.

On a lighter note – it can be fun and rewarding!

  1. John, the garden looks great. It is so satisfying to grow your own food. My garden has done very well this year so far. I like knowing that I can provide for my family and friends. I will have to do a post about the garden very soon. Keep up the good work and keep learning as you go. I think your skills will be tested very soon though. Great post and thanks for the pic’s it all looks great.

  2. I urge anyone who gardens to talk with their neighbors and invite them to garden with you. When the SHTF, you don’t want them stealing from you. If you offer now, they will have the skills and desire to work a garden. When they tell you that they are too busy to make a garden, teach them to bucket garden. Start them off with 4 or 5 buckets. Tomato, String Bean, Pea, Squash, Cucumber or Lettuce? When the SHTF, people are going to steal from you. Wouldn’t you rather pass on your skills ahead of time and get these neighbors to help you defend your garden?

  3. I blanched and put up a gallon of Yellow Crookneck squash this morning myself. My Wife has already made two great squash casseroles in the last week. 🙂 I am hoping for a dehydrator for fathers day.
I have already dug the potatoes up. I am going to get all my onions up for storage soon and start preparing for the fall garden.
My tomatoes are still green but growing. I have pepper plants that have been producing for a couple of weeks now.
What I have is a good supplement to my preps. My fall garden will be about double the size of my spring garden since it has done so well. 🙂

  4. Nice looking garden. You must live South from where I am. I just planted about 10 days ago. I don’t grow enough to survive on. I try to grow a lot of different things to see how they work out. I’d rather learn how to do things when a failure won’t really hurt.

    Be well.

  5. Wow your garden is looking great. I got a late start on mine, but it is coming along. So far this year I have had asparagus and a couple of strawberries. Not to bad since I had to replant all my strawberries after the chickens dug them all up last year! The tomatoes are coming along with a lot of blooms and a bit of fruit, along with the sweet and hot peppers. My zuchini and spaghetti squash all have blooms and some fruit on them. The potatoes are all ready to dig up. The beans are growing up the corn, but haven’t produced anything yet. I am hoping for a good gardening year after the bust we had last year with all the heat! With a little luck I will be able to can a lot of things up this year to get my food storage to about 11/2 years for our family of 4.
