Review: Smith & Wesson M&P15-22 .22LR Semi-Auto

22

This post originally appeared back in May of 2011. I will be posting an UPDATE tomorrow on how my M&P15-22 has performed over the past three years. The original review can be seen HERE. – Rourke

I love the .22LR .

Over the years I have had a variety of .22LR pistols and rifles. From the Ruger Mk II pistol to a Squire Bingham M16R – I have shot thousands of rounds of .22LR and had a ball doing it. Ever since seeing pictures of the Smith & Wesson M&P15-22 – I have wanted

Building your own gun for SHTF

De Leon Ghost-Gun

In prepping there are few things more important than protecting the lives of yourself and your loved ones. It’s your duty to ensure their safety by any means necessary even in the toughest of times. As a prepper you probably own a firearm (or several) as a means of defense for you and your family.

What happens however, when the government comes to take away your guns? How will you protect the ones you care about the most? Most preppers will not last very long without an effective way to protect their lives.

As you probably know, you

Video of the Week: The 80% AR-15 Lower Do it Yourself Instructions

youtube

YouTube is an absolutely incredible source of information on almost anything you can think of. Every week we feature a new video related to a variety of topics such as firearms, first aid, gardening, security, food storage, water filtration….and current events.

Recently a video was published here showcasing one method to complete an 80% polymer AR lower. Here in this video an aluminum  80% lower is worked on to completion.

Building AR’s  from the ground up using non-registered  80% lowers is becoming more and more popular. Due to the ability to build a non-traceable firearm using this method – I would not be surprised if 80% lowers become a thing of the past.

Polymer lowers offer some intriguing possibilities as they are

Washington Times reports soldiers have to modify M4 to make it reliable

The M4 is a fantastic weapon and many thousands of soldiers and contractors use and love it. Regardless – there is evidence that many soldiers are modifying their weapons to make them more reliable and accurate depending upon the conditions of use. I have heard of military policies disallowing the use of high quality accessories such as Magpul PMAG magazines – and NOT allowing our servicemen the best equipment to do their jobs.

The Washington Times article is reporting that there is evidence that M4 carbines manufactured by Colt  provided sub-par performance. Even with this knowledge –

Trying a new holster….

I recently received a new holster to try out carrying my Smith & Wesson M&P9. The holster is made by Aegis Armory and the model I selected is the “Shield” hybrid. I am just now trying it out and so far I am loving it. The M&P9 is held securely in place via the Kydex molded sheath. The backing for the holster is genuine leather.

I choose black Kydex with dark brown leather  - but they have tons of options available. It seems to be pretty versatile as it can be carried inside the waistband or outside – your choice.

Top 3 firearms when on a budget…..

In today’s volatile economy there are many out there preparing for bad times ahead and are frustrated due to tight budgets. Firearms are expensive but a very necessary part of any preparedness system.

My opinion on this subject changes from time to time. New firearms are brought to market, political “storms” can influence selections, and, well….personal preferences just change sometimes.

For those looking to build a budget battery of firearms –  I am going to propose the following:

#1. Shotgun – There are numerous shotguns in the market ranging in price from $150 and up. There is

How much ammo is enough?

Checking out one of my favorite preparedness sites – Total Survivalist Libertarian Rantfest  - Ryan over there just wrote about ammunition levels to have.

I had written about this before back in December of last year and my opinion have changed substantially. I think the recent ammunition and magazine shortages woke me up to the realization that someday you may be faced with the situation that what you have – is all you have – forever. Consider that for a moment. If, for whatever reason, your current supply becomes all you will ever have – no ability to resupply. Do

SHTF ONE GUN DEFENSE

SHTF ONE GUN DEFENSE

BY GREG RENTCHLER, Editor at Large

thesouthwesttactical.com

I’ve been spending a lot of time at my BOL  thinking about a one-gun solution for defending the family in time of SHTF. After much discussion with my survival family and colleagues, we collectively concluded that there is no such thing as a one-gun solution to address the plethora of variations of circumstances involved in a SHTF scenario.

Because times are tough

Thoughts on ammo availability…….

I received the following note from frequent contributor D. -

Various calibers of ammunition are now starting to make an appearance on the marketplace. (Natchez Shooters Supply, Midway USA, etc)    Most are still selling for 3 to 4 times the pre-panic pricing.   Unless you would like to forever pay an extortionate price for ammo, I strongly suggest, WAITING!    If you can hold off on your purchases until prices fall to below $.50 a round (in 20 round quantities) you will send a message to the manufacturers and retailers that you will not abide by such pricing.(This

You’re doing it wrong.  Another article on gear…gun gear.

By Solomon Shorter

I know what you’re thinking right after you read the title.  Another guy that thinks he’s going to tell me what gun I need or the type of training I need to defend my family in a SHTF situation.

Nope.  Not me.  That’s a personal decision and all I can do is wish you well.

What I do want to touch on is gear.  In particular the stuff that you’ll be wearing when you’re trying to take care of business in those

Guest Post: COMMUNITY FILE #5 Training day!

This is another of my “Community files” that I send out to my retreat group. It and the others I have posted here may be of use to you in planning training for your group. D.

COMMUNITY FILE #5

Training day!

Although all of the construction that needs done is very important, this is more so.

Most if not all of you have no military experience let alone combat experience. If I do not try to pass at least the basics along to you, you will probably get yourself killed. Some things we need to train in ASAP:

Commentary – Thoughts on the shotgun as a “one gun” arsenal

A common thread with lots of comments at forums all over the net is “If you could only have one gun….what would it be?” I try to stay away from discussions like that because they tend to end up with bickering and displays of juvenile antics.

The truth is most of us do not have to have only one gun – so the discussions are somewhat fruitless. However – for those on a budget, reality sets in and a “one gun arsenal” may be all that can be afforded.  So – for them – the discussion of a one gun arsenal is very important.

Commentary – Why I zero my AR at 50 yards…….

First off – my eye’s are not what they used to be. 100 yards with a non-magnified optic looks pretty far. 200 yards with a non-magnified optic or open sights is extremely far especially considering target identification. Anyways  - back to why I zero my AR at 50 yards.

The M193 55 grain 5.56mm round – and similar loads - are very flat shooting out to 200-250 yards. A lot depends on sight type and distance the sights are above the bore. Typically, with a zero at 50 yards – the bullet will be close to 2 inches high at 100 yards

The Surefire 60-round AR Magazine

Although it appears that AR-type firearms as well as magazines seem to be in much better supply than just a couple months ago, magazine such as the Surefire 60 60-rd capacity remain in very high demand.

I managed to acquire two samples for testing. With the higher prices on .223 and 5.56 ammunition – testing was limited  to one Surefire 60 magazine and 300 rounds of ammunition.

Let’s cut to the chase: The magazine, ammunition, and firearm performed flawlessly. I was using a newly purchased Bushmaster carbine and the ammunition was a combination of Remington green box

Have you standardized your calibers?

Standardizing calibers is often a popular topic at various preparedness and firearm forums all over the ‘net. The belief is by limiting the number of calibers that your firearms are chambered as well as possibly having common calibers between firearms – you can minimize the chance of running out of ammunition for one gun – thus making it an ill-designed paperweight.

Picture this: You arm yourself with a 9mm carbine and enter a defensive position protecting your property from a few brigands with nasty plans for you and your family. The fence line close to 90 yards away gives way to
