How has it not happened? Perhaps some mad version of submarine launched mutually assured destruction could be part of the reason. Each day, I am grateful that our comfortable, convenient, existence continues unabated.
I have authored a couple of posts regarding EMP with Modern Survival, one had to do with protecting electronics and the other with vulnerabilities of tractor and UTX diesel engines. [Readers - see articles HERE and HERE....Rourke] Some readers may have read TM 5-690, chapter five on electromagnetic pulse protection, the Metatech report to Oak Ridge, Meta-R-320, “The Early-Time (E1) High-Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP) and

What if I told you that last April there was an attack on an electrical power station in California? What if I told you this attack involved multiple people and it appeared very coordinated? What if this attack lasted close to one hour – and the attackers disappeared into the night just before law enforcement appeared? What if I told you the Chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission said the attack was “the most significant incident of domestic terrorism involving the grid that has ever occurred” in the U.S. ?
You probably wouldn’t believe me and I wouldn’t blame you. After

You likely live in a vacuum if you have not heard of the violence erupting across the Middle East. Much of the violence has been attributed to a video which depicts Islam in a comical, disrespectful light. I have had a few people email me and ask me to comment on the situation – so here it goes:
I have watched the video and it is extremely disrespectful towards Muslims and Islam. I have been friends with Muslims and in my experience they are just like you in me – except they worship in a different way.

The other day I had something happen that was kind of a “wake up” call.
A co-worker – who was on vacation in process of moving – called me at work. This is how the conversation went:
Co-worker: “Are you sitting at your desk?”
Rourke: “Yes – why?”
Co-worker: “I need you to bring up bring up MSN.com.”
Rourke: “Done. It’s up.”
Co-worker: “What’s going on?”
Rourke: “What do you mean? What’s up?”

Fellow blogger over at ModernSurvivalBlog wrote up a post about the following -
An EMP attack is one of the most feared methods of TSHTF for me. Unfortuately – I also believe it is one of the most likely. Imagine a total collapse of the power grid along with most all electronic equipment ceasing to funtion. Got those fancy GMRS radio’s? – don’t work. Got that 4 wheeel drive bug out vehicle? – don’t work. Of course – there would be no grocery stores open, no fast food drive thru’s, banks would be closed, and life

Loyal reader J.M. sent me the following link to a story that I found fascinating – see it here.
This video shows San Diego Assistant Port Director Al Hallor admitting that during port inspections that weapons of mass destruction have been found. He states that nothing has been found in San Diego – however he does say that other locations have had discovery’s.
One of my biggest fears in the use of a nuclear weapon on US soil. I honestly am surprised that there has not been another successful terrorist attack with the United States. It’s not

Reader PH emailed me a link to a unique online tool that uses Google Maps to estimate effects of a nuclear detonation.
Here is what he had to say…….”I came across this interesting site that has a nuke blast tracker. You can select the city, wind direction, type of nuke and then see thermal, pressure and fallout ramifications. Thought it could be interesting to share with everyone. ”
Here is the link -

This post was orginally published back in August. There are a lot of new readers here – so I thought I would re-post.
Let me start off by stating that the chance of nuclear terrorism, nuclear war – whatever you want to call it – is rather slim. There is a much greater chance of you loosing your job, getting into a car accident, or being involved in some sort of natural disaster. With that said – the chance of a single or multiple nuclear weapons being used in some form against the United States is

I wanted to pass on some information on free training that can be taken online. This training is provided by the NC Center for Public Health Preparedness.
Topics for study include:
Bioterrorism Chemical Emergencies Radiation Emergencies Natural Disasters Pandemic Influenza Organizational Planning and more………..

I came across another Free DVD Video related to nuclear terrorism – called Nuclear Tipping Point.
From their website:
Nuclear Tipping Point is a conversation with four men intimately involved in American diplomacy and national security over the last four decades. Former Secretary of State George Shultz, former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, former Secretary of Defense Bill Perry and former Senator Sam Nunn share the personal experiences that led them to write two Wall Street Journal op-eds, in support of a world free of nuclear weapons and the steps needed to get

Let me start off by stating that the chance of nuclear terrorism, nuclear war – whatever you want to call it – is rather slim. There is a much greater chance of you loosing your job, getting into a car accident, or being involved in some sort of natural disaster. With that said – the chance of a single or multiple nuclear weapons being used in some form against the United States is ever increasing. Evidence of this – North Korea, Iran, as well as no doubt the huge desire of terrorists that would pay and do about

USA Today reports:
Faisal Shahzad, a Connecticut father of two, pleaded guilty Monday in federal court to plotting to blow up Times Square and warned more such attacks would come unless the U.S. leaves Muslim countries.”We will be attacking the U.S.,” Shahzad told U.S. District Judge Miriam Goldman Cedarbaum. Shahzad, 30, a U.S. citizen born in Pakistan, called himself “a Muslim solder” and said he wanted to “plead guilty and 100 times more” to all of the charges.
This guy appeared to be a normal, law abiding citizen to his friends and his co-workers.
How many more “Faisal Shahzad’s” are out there…..waiting

“In less than a billionth of a second, the electrical intensity on Earth’s surface would become so hot that microchips would fry, power lines would overload and the electric grid would collapse,” says National Geographic, describing . “Everything with microelectronics in it would stop: your car, your computer, the subway. There would be no electricity.”
What is being described here is in relation to an EMP attack. National Geographic’s ’Electronic Armageddon’ documentary describes in great detail the effects of such an attack on the United States as well as potential methods of protecting your electronics.
It is a very real

Watching the news about the happenings in government today is very frustrating.
I am a Reagan Conservative. The ridiculous governmental actions during the last decade have just about lead me to give up hope that there will be any positive change anytime soon. This is one of the driving forces that has me dedicated to a preparedness lifestyle. I just see this country heading in a downward spiral that I am unsure can be reversed.
Here are a few things that really have me worried and are evidence to my concerns:
Rampid government corruption Economic trends and the eventual consequences

Having read the book One Second After, one of my biggest fears is an EMP attack.
What is EMP? In extreme layman’s terms – a nuclear weapon is exploded at high altitude and the explosion sends out an electronic pulse that can have a significant effect on any unprotected electronic equipment. What is the effect? Damage up to and including making the device inoperable.
Opinions vary on exactly what the effect of EMP would be on modern electronics. The severity of the damage depends on many factors such as altitude, power of the weapon itself, and location of the burst. What
