This question is pondered just about as much as “How much ammunition should I store?“. Over the past several years I have changed my mind on this and much of that changing I directly attribute to readers who have disagreed with me. I listened to other peoples opinions and came to the conclusion that the number I had determined was a good one wasn’t.
We are talking about survival and preparedness guns. Guns that are

As much as you can afford.
- – – Rourke
The above is really how I’d like to end this post. I guess that wouldn’t be very entertaining and for those that seriously want an answer it would be a disservice. Come to think of it my answer would be the same regardless – as much as you can afford.
Over the years my idea of an “ideal” ammo stockpile has changed. The

Ammunition availability and prices are as close to “back to normal” as I have seen in a long while – at least here in South Carolina. Local gun shop up the road from me this past weekend had ton’s of inventory of .22LR and no limit. Academy Sports also had quite a bit of off brand 22’s but still on the expensive side(10 cents a round). Even online ammunition retailer Luckygunner.com has a substantial selection

The ammunition market continues to get better since the days following the Sandy Hook shooting. At one point you couldn’t buy a box of 9mm – regardless of the price. Then a few boxes would start to show up at ridiculous prices. I continue to say it – stock up now because you never know when the market will change and the ammo market gets tight again.
Availability on most everything except .22LR seems just

A couple things I want to state right off the bat.
I am NOT saying that the 45ACP, 40S&W, .357 Sig, 45GAP, or any other pistol caliber is inferior to the 9mm. Shoot what you can shoot accurately with the ability to get back on target for follow up shots regardless of caliber. Period. A pistol is NOT the ideal defensive or offensive weapon. It is vastly under-powered compared to a rifle. ALL common pistol

The Sportsman’s Guide offers quite a variety of ammunition at some excellent prices. One of the .223 Remington options that often sells out at several of my areas local stores is the American Eagle AR .223 Remington 55 grain round. Currently in stock at only $8.99 ($8.54 for Members) for a 20 round box – this is one of the less expensive brass case choices.
As an official Sportsman’s Guide affiliate – any purchases made

There are rumors all over that Russian-made ammunition may be banned from importation. The root cause of this rumor is an Executive Order signed by Obama in an attempt to punish Russia for their actions in Crimea. This is what the EO states:
Section 1. (a) All property and interests in property that are in the United States, that hereafter come within the United States, or that are or hereafter come within the possession or

Here in the Southeast the availability of ammunition – and firearms – is about back to normal. With the exception of .22LR most ammunition can be bought pretty much whenever needed. After .22LR, 9mm is the most difficult to get. Wal-Mart is generally sold out of .223/5.56 as well as 7.62x39mm. I have heard from friends that they are finding ALL calibers at Wal-Mart more often – but I have not had the same luck.

Checking out one of my favorite preparedness sites – Total Survivalist Libertarian Rantfest – Ryan over there just wrote about ammunition levels to have.
I had written about this before back in December of last year and my opinion have changed substantially. I think the recent ammunition and magazine shortages woke me up to the realization that someday you may be faced with the situation that what you have – is all you have –

I received the following note from frequent contributor D. –
Various calibers of ammunition are now starting to make an appearance on the marketplace. (Natchez Shooters Supply, Midway USA, etc) Most are still selling for 3 to 4 times the pre-panic pricing. Unless you would like to forever pay an extortionate price for ammo, I strongly suggest, WAITING! If you can hold off on your purchases until prices fall to below $.50 a round

Certainly a viable topic – ammunition availability seems to be getting better. Well – I haven’t seen any .22LR in couple months. Regardless – I saw one online supplier that is supposed to sell ammo “cheaper than dirt” had basic PMC 9mm 50-round boxes for over $60 a box. Ridiculous.
Anyways – here’s the video:
Standardizing calibers is often a popular topic at various preparedness and firearm forums all over the ‘net. The belief is by limiting the number of calibers that your firearms are chambered as well as possibly having common calibers between firearms – you can minimize the chance of running out of ammunition for one gun – thus making it an ill-designed paperweight.
Picture this: You arm yourself with a 9mm carbine and enter

I have just found out that ReadyReserveAmmo.com is expecting a shipment of 5.56mm NATO 62 Grain XM855 Penetrator rounds this week. They are currently taking pre-orders.
I know many of you are looking for ammunition including 5.56mm. At the price that 5.56 ammunition is selling for – around $1.00 per round – take advantage of his deal. Currently they are selling 30 rounds in a long-term storage can or $16.95. This works out to be

I wanted to get this information out as quickly as possible. I know that many of you – just like me – are looking for ammunition. Much of what I am able to find online is ridiculously expensive. I am happy to report that ModernSurvivalOnline sponsor ReadyReserveAmmo.com actually has some calibers in stock. For how long? Likely not much longer.
As of typing this Thursday night they have .22LR, 9mm,

I live in South Carolina and have visited several gun shops as well as stores that carry firearms and ammunition. All are pretty much the same – no semi-automatic firearms (centerfire or rimfire), no magazines, and several calibers of ammunition virtually absent.
Don’t see this anymore.
With the threat of a new Assault Weapons Ban just over the horizon, there has been a massive rush on guns, magazines and ammunition – specifically AK’s, AR’s

Layering your Weapons
By Bret Gould
Combat is nothing new. Unless we factor in a few technological advances, small arms and their uses, have changed little in the 20th century. For example, an ’03 Springfield in 30-06 has everything in common with a custom 30-06. In hand to hand and cutting weapons, there is nothing new under the sun. One of the areas needed to be studied

We are all aware of the current recession, and it doesn’t look like the world economy is going to get better anytime soon. In fact, things might just take a turn for the worst. Scientists have predicted that the Earth’s major natural resources are going to be severely depleted within the next 20-30 years, causing worldwide panic and chaos. With that being said, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. This means having the
