Survival Seeds – What role do they play in survival?

Font Size » Large | Small

Visit a few survival & preparedness blogs and you will see many advertisements for “survival seeds”. What are survival seeds? From what I have seen survival seeds are specially selected varieties of popular vegetables that are also specially packaged to promote long-term storage life. One of the goals – and part of what you pay for is the ability to buy these seed packs – and put them away – and to a certain point forget about them until you need them.

Anyone that has read my writings for long or watched my YouTube video’s will know that I am a big believer in gardening – both as a method to save money as well as a way to acquire food after TSHTF. You cannot simply buy some seeds – store them away for 5 years – then plant them after a major collapse and expect to suddenly have loads of produce to feed the family. Just not going to happen.

Gardening takes practice. Therefore – if you plan to purchase and store survival seeds – buy enough to also plant NOW. By planting these seeds now you can see how the varieties included in the pack grow in your particular soil in your particular climate. If things go well – great. If things do not – then learn from it, make adjustments, and move on. Now is the time to experiment and make mistakes – not after TSHTF.

There are many companies out there that sell survival seeds. One of the most fairly priced offerings comes from BePreparedNow.net. BePreparedNow.net offers Mylar packed survival seed packs for around $50.00 – depending upon selection. If you are wanting to stockpile seeds for long-term storage – please pay them a visit.

I totally agree. However, I know several who have bought survival seeds and don’t currently garden! That seems crazy to me. We garden and have doubled our garden for the past two years. Your soil doesn’t get ready overnight to plant and I think we need to make sure everyone is aware how important it is to already be gardening, for this reason if for no other! We love the garden as a vital supplement to our preparedness and food storage. We know where our food comes from and the quality is so superior! Luckily we can have something in the garden almost year round. We are about to plant our fall garden and I started several varieties of seeds about two weeks ago.

This is so important! Most people don’t realize just how much work is involved breaking the soil and improving it for the best results. Imagine trying to do all that in a survival situation.
