Starting a Survival Library
Knowledge is power. Information is freedom.
In the event of a long-term survival situation where the general population remains off grid and access to food/services become rare or totally absent – the ability to access needed information will be critical. Honestly – information is needed now as well – to assist in preparing for what might lie ahead.
Here is a list of books that I recommend to both gain knowledge now – as well as use for reference later:
- How to Survive the End of the World as We Know It: Tactics, Techniques, and Technologies for Uncertain Times
- Patriots: Surviving the Coming Collapse
- Survive!: The Disaster, Crisis and Emergency Handbook
- Bug Out: The Complete Plan for Escaping a Catastrophic Disaster Before It’s Too Late
- Where There Is No Doctor
- All New Square Foot Gardening: Grow More in Less Space!
- The Survival Retreat: A Total Plan For Retreat Defense
- Starting A New Life In Rural America: 21 Things You Need to Know Before You Make Your Move
- Where There Is No Dentist
- Army Field Manual FM 21-76 (Survival, Evasion, and Recovery)
- U.S. Army First Aid Manual
- SAS Survival Handbook, Revised Edition: For Any Climate, in Any Situation
- Mini Farming: Self-Sufficiency on 1/4 Acre
- U.S. Army Survival Manual FM 21-76
- Urban Homesteading
All above are provided with Amazon.com links which if used to purchase help support this site.
In addition to books – I buy many magazines on a regular basis. Here is a quick list:
- Guns & Ammo
- SWAT
- Mothers Earth News
- Organic Gardening
- Urban Farm
- Field & Stream
…….and just about any magazine that comes out specifically about gardening/survival/homesteading.
A survival library is an important resource and should be included as part of any prepper plan. I have written before about how I have stored a lot of information in digital format. Recently I have been spending a decent amount of time printing what I think are the more important documents and organizing them in 3-ring binders.
If you know of any good books that I have missed – please let me know.
Take care all -
Rourke

two and five in the list are the same (patriots)
SWAT magazine is perhaps the best magazine i have ever purchased and am a loyal subscriber to it. by far the best reviews, information and tactics ideas of any gun magazine (for a few years i subscribed to every gun magazine there was – now i only subscribe to SWAT)
i bet there are many gun owners who don’t look at or purchase SWAT due to the perception that it is not of the desired information (SWAT tends to seem it would only be interesting to police or SWAT operators) any gun owner should purchase at least one copy and give it a read…
Also the Enemy At The Gates column in that magazine is by far my favorite one… a definite must read
that and join the NRA – while it may not always seem to fit my desires as a political voice (sometimes they seem to dither or be too soft on gun rights to me) it is the most powerful lobby for gun owners and the more members there are the more i think politicians “get the message”

Great resources you’ve posted here! I look forward to adding some of these references to my own small library.
Thanks for all you do.

Army Special Forces Handbook, How to survive on wheat,Renewable energy for your home,The Holy Bible, Basic Gunsmithing Book, Home Canning book. Sorry just had to add a few. Your list is pretty comprehensive I like and have most all those book already and they are a great read. So much you can learn from all of the books you mentioned.

That’s a pretty good list and I still need to get some of them. Some more books I believe are very helpful now and into the shaky future include: Gaia’s Garden by Hemenway, The Humanure Handbook by Jenkins (free download), Rocket Mass Heaters by Evans and Jackson, and possibly Homebrew Wind Power by Bartman and Fink, and The Hand Sculpted House.
I need to do as you have and start printing out some of the more important stuff I currently only have in digital.

Good lists. A couple of books to add are: Les Stroud’s Survive: Essential Skills and Tactics to Get you Out of Anywhere Alive and Possum Living.
