“Sparky” Firestarter Review
One of my sponsors Shelf Reliance recently sent me a Sparkie Firestarting Tool. I have seen video’s on YouTube about these and welcomed the opportunity to see how it works for myself.
Being able to start a fire is very important in many survival situations. There are many devices that proclaim to be able to do just that in small and lightweight packages. What impressed me first with the Sparkie is its ability to be used one-handed. Should an injury occur to an arm or hand – this could be invaluable.
Next – the Sparkie is very lightweight at .8 ounces. This is ideal for use in a bug out bag or survival kit. It is also waterproof – meaning that it will still function after getting wet. I tried this myself and it was true. I simply shook it off and no problems.
To test the Sparkie – I decided to gather some tinder and other flammable material into my fire pit on my back patio. Very old and dried up grass and leaves were what I decided to try.
I placed all of this in the fire pit. I tried the Sparkie a few times – to “practice”. The Sparkie is operated by pushing a button on the side of the case – then pushing the tip into a solid object. When done – some seriously hot and large sparks will fly out the end.
Once I felt like I was ready – I separated some of the leaves off the top of the tinder. I then pressed the Sparkie into the tinder a few times with sparks flying out onto the tinder. I could see some of the sparks laying on the tinder – burning. I blew on it a few times and – poof! – there were flames. I placed the leaves and other material onto the flames – and I had fire.
The Sparkie worked amazingly well. Simple to operate and effective.
