Review: Backpackers Pantry Meal

Stopped by a REI store and looked around. Holy cow they are expensive! I decided to pick up a few varieties of “camp food”.  One that I decided to try was Backpackers Pantry’s Chicken with Potatoes and Stuffing.

My 11 year old son decided he wanted it for supper one night – so we made it together.

We followed the instructions per the package to pepare the food. After I dumped the water in the foil packet – I stirred pretty hard for a couple of minutes. I sealed the top and let it sit.

When I opened it – I poured it into a bowl. My son was not real happy when we found that quite a bit of the original mix was still dry. All the water had been absorbed. So – I have to assume that the 2.5 cups need per the instruction was just not enough. I added another cup of water and stirred.

I poured the contents back in a bowl (by the way – it was not easy and made quite a mess trying to get the mix BACK in the package). My son then realized that the potatoes, stuffing and chicken were all mixed together. I believe he uttered the word “gross” a couple of times.

I guess he thought that a plate with a checkedn breast on one side, some mashed potatoes on the other, and some stuffing in the middle was going to exit the foil pack.

He tried it – and left the room in a hurry. I tried it – and thought to myself – “Well, if I was starving it would be good. I’m not starving – so it’s not”. I got a loaf of bread and the peanut butter and jelly.

Oh well – time to try something else.
