Ready.gov – Tax Dollars Well Spent?

It’s not too often that I look at any government’s decision on where to spend my tax dollars in a positive light. Well, I think I have found one to tell you about.

It is the website Ready.gov.

Ready.gov is a website developed by the Department of Homeland Security. The purpose of the site is to help prepare citizens for a variety of potential threats and disasters – from terrorism to severe winter storms.

Ready.gov Main Page

As of this writing upon entering Ready.gov you are confronted with an attractive site with a green-boxed section at the top of the screen with what appears to be steps to follow. Here they are:

  1. Get a Kit.
  2. Make a Plan.
  3. Stay Informed.

Not bad advice. A paragraph next to these steps provides a statement telling you that following those 3 simple steps will make a big difference in ensuring the safety of your loved ones. I would agree with that – mostly.

Following the link on these steps opens another page with content related to making a Basic Emergency Supply Kit. Reviewing their recommendations – I have to say they are pretty good. For a BASIC kit to have in the home – not bad at all. There are several items that I feel are lacking and no doubt they are left out on purpose due to the recommendations coming from the US Government.

First on the list would be a knife and/or saw. These tools could very valuable for any cutting application as well as sizing wood. Also – a firearm. Depending upon the situation – a firearm may be needed to protect your family and supplies from looters, gangs or other threats. Extra gasoline is also not  on the list. Extra fuel would be a very good item to have after a disaster. Lastly – a water filter such as the excellent Berkey-line. Drinkable clean water is often a rare commodity in an emergency.

Ready.gov also has numerous video’s and downloadable brochures with content related to first aid, food, and even pet-needs.

Overall this is a pretty good site and provides good information for the general public. Tax dollars well spent – if people will use it.

Interesting…brought to you by the same people who took five days to get water to the refugees at the Superdome.
