Poem from the movie “Act of Valor”

I just got finished watching the movie Act of Valor again – great movie. Acting was not award winning but lots of action and should give viewers a greater appreciation for those that serve. Anyways – in the movie there is a poem recited that I was pretty impressed with. One of those “life lessons” and “gets you thinking” kind of things. The poem was part of a letter written to the child of a soldier that was killed in action.

Here is “Live Your Life” Poem by Chief Tecumseh:

“So live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about their religion; respect others in their view, and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and its purpose in the service of your people. Prepare a noble death song for the day when you go over the great divide.

Always give a word or a sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend, even a stranger, when in a lonely place. Show respect to all people and grovel to none.

When you arise in the morning give thanks for the food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies only in yourself.

Abuse no one and no thing, for abuse turns the wise ones to fools
and robs the spirit of its vision. When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.”

I think these are good words to live by.

  1. “Grovel to none”? I guess he wasn’t married, huh? Just kidding! There is a quote that comes up during the credits at the conclusion of Black Hawk Down that found strong favor with this career soldier:

MSG. Gary Gordon: “My love: You are strong and you will do well in life. I love you and my children deeply. Today and tomorrow let each day grow and grow. Keep smiling and never give up, even when things get you down. So in closing my love, tonight tuck my children in bed warmly, tell them I love them, then hug them for me and give them both a kiss goodnight for daddy.”

No, it is not the mantra to live by. However, I always considered that my death would be in combat, so after starting a family, these words sunk deep in my mind.
