Planning and Goals
Several weeks ago I ate at a Chinese food place and when I opened my fortune cookie it read – “A goal without a plan is called a wish.”.
So true.
I am a huge planner. I set goals. I make lists of things to do. I also re-evaluate those goals and lists as things change. Without writing down these goals and the planning to accomplish them – I feel I would be much less productive. I also think I would go a little nuts with all that stuff packed inside my little brain!
My favorite time to plan is coming up – end of the year. New Years Resolutions – planning for the next year.
I know many people that never make New Years Resolutions. They think it is a waste of time. I totally agree – if tht is all it is. A bunch of words written on a piece of paper will mean nothing if here is no action behind it. I am going to post most of my resolutions here on this blog on December 31st. I will also track them throughout 2011 (as long as we continue to have Internet access!!).
I challenge everyone to make goals AND write down how you will accomplish reaching those goals. Get out a pad of paper and think about something important you want to accomplish in 2011 – and write down the Goal. After writing down the title – write down the steps that you will take to reach that goal. All your goals do not have to be preparedness oriented. Lets look at an example:
Goal – To reach 1000 daily readers on my blog by the end of 2011.
-
Provide good content every day
-
Post on 2 topics at 5 survival & preparedness forums each week
-
Write guest posts for at least 2 other preparedness-related blogs
-
Hold a giveaway at least once per month
-
Write 3 articles for EzineArticles.com
-
Keep up with Facebook page
The above is just a simple example. For myself – I probably go a little overboard with my planning. I often will make my goal – then create a list of steps to accomplish and reach that goal – but also sometimes make a list for each step. Anyways – on December 31st I will publish my list of preparedness related goals for everyone to see (my personal ones would be far too boring!).
Goals……financial, personal, preparedness………lots of plans coming for 2011.

I noticed you made a list of your goals. Many people confuse list making with goal setting. When I had a real job in a fortune 500 company, before it was shipped to India without me, They had all managerial people learn to plan and organize. We were taught to set strategic goals ( our next salary increase depended on meeting them) and then set tactical goals or steps to achieve them. We met with our boss monthly at first and then quarterly to review. Goals are strategic and lists are tactical…This type of management might be applied here.

Hi Carl –
Thanks for the input. If you re-read my post – I didn’t make a list of goals – I stated one goal and then made a list of things to do to accomplish that goal. See below:

I agree with what you are saying. I have taken several classes on productivity and goal setting. There has to be a plan behind the goal to increase the chances that it will be reached.
Thanks and take care –
