A few random thoughts……..

A few things that have been on my mind…….
    • Thank you to TL, MJ and AH for your recent donations - it is greatly appreciated. As always – please do not donate unless you can truly afford it. If you can afford it and would like to support MSOnline – please click HERE.
    • I am hoping to get my HAM radio by the middle of October. From talking to some of my local “prepper” contacts – the question of whether or not to get a licence has come up. Myself  -I am not really concerned about getting one and plan to. This is the model I plan to get  - click HERE.
    • I caught myself recently saying to my wife – “Hey, I filled up the car today and ONLY paid $3.19 per gallon.” You see? It is working. People are getting used to gas over $3.00 per gallon. It’s a shame and pathetic. I am all for capitalism and companies that take on risk to be in business making a profit. BUT…..come on. It is kinda funny that in the aftermath of Katrina the price of gasoline rose tremendously - and so did the profits of the oil companies. Even recently the cost of gasoline is much higher than it has been in the past – yet the cost of oil is not. There is no absolute correlation between the two. Very frustrating. There is a lot of evidence that the oil companies control oil refinery output AND then artificially raise fuel prices to make record profits.
    • I recently signed up my 8 year old – Christopher – in the Cub Scouts. I never participated in Scouting when I was a kid – I wish I had. I have heard so many good things about the Scouts – and with the negative influences surrounding kids now-a-days the Scouts have never been needed more. I am looking forward to the camping trips and other activities coming up. He is very excited.
    • I have been using my Buck Hoodlum quite a bit recently and so far it has held up nicely. Clearing some brush – some of it pretty thick – required little effort. A good swipe through the vegetation and there it fell. Edge is holding up very well.
    • I have been reading and researching quite a bit lately on….well…..how this country has gotten to where it is today. Needless to say – I think we are in a very tough situation. I have not been ignorant of many of the things I am finding – however I am very disappointed with much of what I am learning. I do not often talk about politics – but that is going to have to change. As the title of this blog states – “Thoughts on Survival and the World Today” – I feel the need to voice my opinion. I am Conservative on my beliefs. I also firmly believe that our political system is broke and full of corruption and maneuvering that is not for the good of the people. Politics are like many other topics that when discussing- you cannot please everyone. Regardless – I will voice my opinion and may possibly cause others to be more aware – and I may learn something from others at the same time.
    •  I have gotten some good deals using Groupon lately. I bought a $25 dollar Gift Card to a local English-style pub for $12.00. Great deal. Also got a $20 Gift Card to another local restaurant I frequent for lunch for $10.00.
    • I just received a box of 50 rounds of .30 Carbine ammo from BulkAmmo.com . Next opportunity I will empty the box thru my M1 Carbine and report back how the stuff shoots.
and finally…….
    • If you have not read this article – you should. Many preppers prep for a variety of reasons in mind. It may be because they live in a hurricane prone area of they fear an all out economic collapse. This article discusses potential effects of an EMP attack on the United States from Iran. Interesting is the article is written by a former Revolutionary Guard so he provides some profound insight.
Take care all -

Economic concerns reflected in stock market

In just the past two days the stock market has had the worst drop since 2008. On Thursday the Dow plunged 391 points – with mid-day drops as much as 540 points.

Unemployment remains a serious concern. The Federal Reserve’s negative outlook and ridiculous reaction to the economy is not helping matters. The overall Global Economy continues to struggle. President Obama’s Job Plan is being viewed as a “non-idea” and has little chance of success.

Basically – the S is H(itting)TF. Slowly but surely it is happening.

Time will tell. As the economy continues to struggle it will become more obvious what the outcome will be. How long will the economy continue to drag along before it just collapses from exhaustion? Who knows. I want to believe that it can turn around – but at the moment I just do not see it. Is it possible? I think…….barely.

Normally the market would rebound and in a big way after such a drop on Wednesday and Thursday. Will be interesting.

Keep prepp’n!

Thoughts on the Presidential Debate……..

I am not going to get into a lot of specific policy differences and platform issues of each candidate. I just want to give a few thoughts. I have not watched the past couple debates involving the Republican candidates. I know….shame on me.

One of the reasons I haven’t watch the past couple debates is I felt that my favorite candidate most likely stands no chance – and that is unfortunate. As far as this debate that took place Thursday September 22nd in Orlando Florida – I was really impressed.

I am not naive. Presidential candidates are not going to stand up and say blatant things I do not want to here. They play with words at times and are very careful how they say things. They are looking for votes – I know that. However, when trying to select who I will vote for in the upcoming Primary in my state as well as for President – I like to listen and get a feeling for each candidate. Of course I am interested in their track record and their beliefs on many issues. Many of the candidates have very similar beliefs. Ron Paul certainly stands out from the crowd as far as different beliefs and stances on many issues.

Here are my thoughts and no doubt many will say – “What? How could you think that? Did you watch the same debate as me?” Well – all is good as long as you realize that I am always right. :)

Mitt Romney impressed me. I have not always been a fan. Its just his persona – he bores me. Last night – I saw something from him. He was decisive. He was clear. He was confident. He also had passion. I was impressed.

Rick Santorum has always impressed me. He seems smart and impassioned. His stances on most all issue are inline with my beliefs. I like him a lot.

Michelle Bachmann was disappointing. I have liked her and her Conservative beliefs. I also like the stance she took on NOT raising the debt ceiling. She just seemed a little…..bland. She didn’t stand out to me. Who knows what will happen over the coming weeks.

Herman Cane is awesome. I really like this guy. He is not a politician and that is a major benefit to me. He certainly seems passionate and very much a leader. Of most all the candidates up on stage he seemed to me to speak “leadership”. I enjoyed hearing him speak and feel that he may be the best motivator running.

Newt Gingrich is the smartest person running. He also stands probably no chance of winning. He has been my candidate all along. I truly believe this guy could make a difference. There is still quite a bit of time so who knows. I have a lot more experience with Newt than all the other candidates and really like what he has to say.

Rick Perry – I do not like him at all. Now – to be honest – I have not seen him much and there is a lot of time. There is a reason why so many people like him. I just haven’t seen it yet. His answer on boarder security to me is ridiculous. He seems too polished and seems like another politician to me. I am totally ready to change my mind though.

Ron Paul. Oh boy – this is tough. I really like his Conservative stance on many issues. His beliefs on the Federal Reserve – right on. On other things – the guy seems a little “nutty”. Lord – here comes the comments and emails – I know, I know. I am not saying he couldn’t do the job. I just don’t agree with some of his views. That’s OK right? After all – this is America.

So – what are your thoughts on who you like right now?

Charlotte NC area Prepper meeting?

There are a couple of local preppers that I meet for lunch every so often. It is great getting together with fellow preppers and having discussions that you just can’t have with most co-workers and friends.

I have had a couple of requests to plan a get together in the Charlotte NC area. I certainly would like to do this – however I am really not interested in any kind of seminar or putting on a presentation. I think it would be great to get a small group together, maybe watch a short topic-related video, and talk about “prep’n-stuff”.

If you are interested in attending a get together – please email me at emergencycd (at) gmail.com and put in the subject line “Meeting”.

Reminder: 2011 Safecastle Freedom Awards Contest

ModernSurvivalOnline is participating website in the contest described below. At the end of the year I will select one Guest Post to send to Safecastle.

Feel’n Lucky?

Go For It! — Prizes Worth $12,000 in the 2011 Safecastle Freedom Awards — a “New Media” Survivalist Contest

“I’m pleased to announce the 2011 Safecastle Freedom Awards–a program in which we will provide the talented, deserving winners with some of the greatest preparedness-related prizes in the survival realm!” said Vic Rantala, owner of Safecastle.

“What we aim to do is find and recognize the best, original, web-based content of the year, related to survivalism and preparedness.”

This is essentially a contest of skill. Eligible entries will include new non-fiction articles written and originally posted online at a recognized, participating blog or forum and new survival/preparedness videos originally posted this year and “sponsored” by or posted at a participating blog or forum (see below for participating websites).

Every one of our finalists will be a winner and will receive an engraved “Safecastle Freedom Award” as pictured here, signifying the noteworthy achievement of contributing materially to our country’s preparedness.

The creators of the articles and videos judged to be the very best of the best will be awarded the prizes described further below.

Competition Guidelines are few, but what there are, are there for good reason:

1.  Keep it clean and family-friendly.

2.  Modern attention spans are short. That means, in this new media, we are looking for articles that are concise. 1500 words in a non-fiction article is the maximum length please. For the short-form video, 6 minutes is the limit. Note that shorter just may be better.

3.  Submit your own original article or video to ONLY ONE of the participating blogs or forums for entry into this contest. Note your intention to enter this contest with that submission to the participating website so that there are no mistakes. If it becomes apparent that an entry was submitted to multiple websites as an original sole entry, it will be disqualified from the contest.

4.  Do not plagiarize anyone else’s work. The author is solely responsible for the content of his or her article or video. Plagiarization results in the forfeiture of any prizes that may be awarded as well as any potential legal ramifications.

5.  Article and video submissions must be posted originally at a participating blog or forum. For videos such as those first posted to YouTube, they must appear on the sponsoring blog or forum within one week of that YouTube posting to qualify as an original creative eligible for prize consideration in this contest–and not appear somewhere else first.

6.  Original article authors and video creators can enter as many different stories and videos as they wish–but again–see #3 above. To be clear–you MAY submit one creation at one participating website and another creation at another participating website–but not the same original piece at more than one site.

7.  Authors and video producers retain ownership rights to their work, but they also agree that those articles and videos may be subsequently posted at Safecastle’s blog, Refuge and/or on Safecastle’s store site,  www.prepared.pro without further renumeration.

8.  Contest prizes are awarded only to residents of the continental U.S. where there are no legal constraints to such a contest awards program. Prize winners are responsible for paying any taxes that may be due as a result of their prize awards.

9.  Each participating website will be fully responsible for selecting their own article and video finalists (one of each if they have suitable submissions) by Dec. 31, 2011. Then in January of 2012, a panel of expert judges assembled by Safecastle LLC will manage a playoff judging system to determine the prize winners from among the many finalists.

10. Owners, employees, and their family members of Safecastle and the participating blogs and forums are NOT eligible for participation, recognition, or prizes in this contest.

11.  Contest winning decisions are final and cannot be challenged or altered, except at the sole discretion of Safecastle LLC.

The PRIZES are very nice! …

1.  Grand prize, for overall best in show (video or article):  a brand new, fully geared-up Joey-XP Teardrop Trailer, list price of $7065.

2.  First prizes for the best video and best article:  winner’s choice of an EcoloBlue 30 atmospheric water generator , list price, $1500.

OR a portable solar back-up system by POWERENZ — the LFP10. list price, $1550.
3.  Second prizes in the article and video categories will be awarded a Katadyn Pocket , value $320.
Third prize in each of the two categories will be Excalibur 9-Tray Dehydrators, value $275.

4. All finalists will receive a Safecastle Freedom award.

5.  Sponsoring blog/forum owners for the grand and first-prize winners will receive Safecastle gift certificates worth $250 each.

More on the Judging

Participating forums and blogs will solicit original entries from their readers. It is up to those websites to use whatever method works best to determine their chosen contest finalists (one for each category–article and video). Entries must have been first posted to those websites during 2011.

In January of 2012, the various finalist entries will be submitted to Safecastle LLC. The final prize winners will be determined by selected playoff system managed by a panel of judges chosen by Safecastle. Prizes will be awarded no later than February 2012.

New food storage product found

The majority of my food storage revolves around common foods found in grocery stores all over the country. Storing what I eat and eating what  store is what I practice for the most part. I have recently begun purchasing freeze dried and dehydrated foods to supplement.

On a shopping trip to a local “Mart” recently, I came across a couple of products that peaked my interest. These are complete meals that only require water to prepare.

The first one I came across was the Banquet Homestyle Bakes. The link takes you to Amazon which actually sells these meals through a subscription/delivery service. Check the link for more information on this product. These are a “just add water” product. There are several flavors and many contain meat – which for me is a bonus. They are relatively inexpensive as well at around $3.00. Shelf life is in excess of a year- I suspect much longer is the reality.

The next product I saw was the Betty Crocker Helper Complete Meals. This link also goes to Amazon and they offer a subscription/delivery service on these as well. These also from what I have seen are “just add water” and many varieties contain meat. Storage life is in excess of a year. Price – same at around $3.00.

These two products look to be a good addition to my food storage program. Some plus’s are light weight, simple to prepare – just add water, and pretty inexpensive.

I have not tried them yet – will report when I do.

Take care all -

Rourke
