New non-lethal government device

Font Size » Large | Small

A frequent reader sent me the included video about a new non-lethal device for law enforcement use called the “Lazer Dazer“.

Basically the device emits a high-intensity laser pattern that disrupts the ability to see.

Of concern is the potential of this device to falling into the hands of criminals. Interesting concept.

Take care all -

Rourke

so it heats up your face and blinds you at the same time? Sounds like a plan.

Hmmm. A question comes to mind. Couldn’t a potential suspect (one not incrimenated) sue for retinal damage? It is a laser, right?

Now, now,… can’t let all those portable guard towers go to waste.

Ahem– Just in case the lazers get into the wrong hands, it would be a good idea to add a mirror to your survival kits.

    Morning Star –

Time to stock up on some big mirrors! Thanks for the comment.

wouldn’t a shotgun work better than a mirror? any badguy with one of these things is must be trying to do you harm, maybe kidnapping, so point your shotgun at the laser and pull the trigger let the spred of 00 buck get you out of there. just a thought.

Absolutely correct. Kidding on the mirror.

Wouldn’t a pair of sunglasses with a reflective coating combat the laser?

It’s a nice concept but I don’t think it is practical. Could be very dangerous in the wrong hands (kids, criminals, pranksters).

So this is what Frodo felt like when looking at the Eye of Mordor in Lord Of The Rings? :)

Knowing the color of the laser they are using – green in this case, you could buy the protective glasses they sell for working with that color laser.

I suspect it would then defeat the laser before you had to deal with it.

I could be wrong. But, check out http://www.wickedlasers.com and select a laser model – they offer glasses for the lasers, to protect your eyes from reflected laser energy.

When lazer dazers are outlawed only outlaws will have lazer dazers.

I disagree with the comments saying that this device would be too easy to overcome or counteract. For one, how many hoodlums out there are going to make sure to carry the protective eye wear just in case? And even if they did, that’s just defense against a single tool that the police have available.

It reminds me of a show I saw where a guy was able to defend himself against a tazer. As he was being shocked, he was able to bring one of his arms down against the wires to cut the circuit. He went down, but was quickly back up. This caused some to make claims about how someone who was determined enough could overcome a tazer, when in fact it took a lot of mental preparation combined with the fact that the test subject knew it was coming in order to break free. Otherwise the whole test would have had different results.

I think that this “lazer dazer” will be an effective tool for the police force. About it getting into the hands of trouble makers, I wouldn’t worry about it. I mean, it’ll probably eventually happen, but it’s not any worse than what’s already out there.

I wonder what it says about me that when I saw that video of the “dazer laser” on peoples’ faces, and immediately thought of the little-known film: “The McPherson Tape” later renamed “Alien Abduction: Incident in Lake County”. It’s fun (and it’s also funny even though it’s not intended to be) little movie that has a lot of great examples of “what-NOT-to-do” WTSHF and in combat situations. If you ever get a chance to see that film, you’ll know what I mean, both about what not to do, and about that strange laser.

This technology is not new. The Navy (specifically, the Riverine Units) has been using it. The military version/Make is mounted on a Ruger 10/22 composite stock. Like Tasers, and GUNS, of course some Sh@#bird could get them, but…training, tactics and teamwork will, for the most part (like with guns) overcome that.

Don’t worry guys and gals. This device does not work at all. The only thing it does is waste our tax money. I used these overseas in Iraq working for the State Dept. It doesn’t blind you, it doesn’t heat up and what they told us, is that it will make you sick if you look at it too long……yeah that didn’t work either. So, no need to stock up on reflective shades or mirrors.
