My “Getting Back Home” Kit
I have talked about what may happen should TSHTF and you are away from home – possibly at work or running an errand. The focus off this post is to show you what I have put together in one of my “Get Me Home” kits. I have several of these as I have multiple vehicles.
I do not suggest that my kit is perfect or ideal for everyone. Heck – it’s probably not ideal for me. But this is what I have right now in my vehicle that I drive back and forth to work – which is 22 miles away from my house. Please feel free to leave a comment or two on what you think. If there is something I have left out – let me know.
Critera for Design: In planning my kit – I consider that I will be no more than 30 miles or so from home. Therefore – days and days worth of food and water are just not necessary. I am looking for something that is lightweight and provides good mobility during some light jogging. I also need something that will not catch on every branch and bush should I have to travel through some vegetation.
Selection of Bag: I choose to use a Maxpedition Fatboy Versipack. Maxpedition makes absolute top rate products at excellent prices. It is not a huge bag, but not tiny either. For me – just the right size. Ruggedly built with lots of pockets and methods to attach other items – just a great design.
Internals – What’s Inside: There are a lot of pockets to the Fatboy (not me!). So here in an inventory of everything inside the bag:
- Hand Warmers (4)
- Emergency Poncho (1)
- Waterproof Matches/Waterproof Match Case (3)
- LED Head Lamp (1)
- Gerber Multi-pliers (1)
- Water Purification Tablets, set (1)
- Compass (1)
- Radio (1)
- Insect Repellent (1)
- 3 Watt LED Flashlight (1)
- Campers Cup (1)
- Bic Lighters (2)
- Butane Torch Lighter (1)
- First Aid Kit (1)
- Duct Tape (1)
- Snack Bars (3)
- Space Blanket (1)
- Mosquito Head Net
- Berkey Sport Bottle (1 – water filtration) – available from Directive21.com(Legendary Berkey filtration for $24.99 with Free Shipping – WOW!!!)
That’s it.
This is just one of my short range bags. For longer excursions where I travel further from my home – larger bags with additional supplies are taken. I will post on those at a later date.
Thanks and take care -
Rourke
