LDS Cannery – Planning a Visit
I am very happy to say that I found a LDS cannery that is only about 1 hour from my house.
If you are not familiar with what an LDS cannery is…..watch the video below. SouthernPrepper1 does an excellent job describing what it is, how it works and what you can find there. Basically – you can buy dry food there and can it (or buy it already canned). Much of the food you buy has a 30-year shelf life.
Something to note – it is very inexpensive at the cannery is non-profit so everything is sold at cost.
For more info on LDS cannery’s - click here.
I will report back how it goes.

Thanks for the video link, I checked out the other 2 videos from southernprepper1′s Channel, it looks easy and what a great deal! I have a cannery about 3 hours from me, I need to call them and find out the ins and outs of doing this. I also know a LDS lady, I have talked to her about this before, I should get back with her about this again. I know quite a few people out here where I live who would probably be interested in doing this, maybe on a quarterly basis, we could save up and make a day of it. I am most interested in the refried beans and possibly the wheat.

Hey Rourke, I live is Salt Lake City, the headquarters of the LDS church. We have canneries all over the valley and they are a great resource for getting your food storage done. I have used the cannery quite a few times to get my bulk food canned into smaller, more usable sizes. They are more than willing to help you out in any way so their is no fear in using the machines. Great post.

I have visited our local LDS Cannery several times with a friend who is a member of the church, however I know that I can go there without my friend with me, so locate the Cannery closest to you and call them, they have a recorded message that lets you know if you can go without a church member or not. The prices are fantastic and I have even borrowed the canner that they lend out for a week at a time and it worked great. I canned 60 #10 cans in about 3 hrs all by myself the first time I used it. They are great people to work with and the food is great too.

We’re in Utah also–Love the LDS cannery! Great prices and friendly help. Ours will also let us check out a portable canner and buy the supplies to can the stuff at home (works great for moms with little kids that would have to hire a sitter to go to the cannery for 3 hours). Enjoy your trip–hope it all goes well for you!

That is great you found an LDS cannery not far from you. I found one about 45 minutes away, and made an appointment. Before I left the house I called to confirm, only to find they closed the facility indefinitely due to construction. Spoke to the director but she could not give me an ETA on the completion date. I hope your visit works out well, look forward to the “trip report!”

I’m in Harrisburg, PA and have tried to find out if we have a cannery near us. I can’t locate any information for our area.

Thank you for the information. I’m now looking into buying a portable canner as there isn’t a center near me. Nothing on ebay, but I found some sites that weren’t cheap but the prices were reasonable.
