Knife Review: Remington Sportsman Series F.A.S.T. Fixed Blade Knife

A good knife is one of the most basic tools of survival. Going into a local Dick’s Sporting Goods I saw a nice looking knife called a Remington Sportsman Series F.A.S.T. Knife. At the store – it had a hunters blaze orange handle – which is not really what I wanted. I checked on Amazon and found numerous colors available. Most all customer reviews on Amazon were favorable – which was encouraging since I had not yet been able to handle one. I included the all black model in my most recent Amazon order.
My Amazon box arrived and upon opening I found the all black Remington knife packaged in the same plastic blister pack I saw at Dick’s. After opening and finally being able to hold the knife – I was pretty impressed.
A couple of quick specs -
- Overall length is 10 1/2″
- Blade length is 5 3/4″
The first observation I made was the handle feeling soft but yet firm. The handle is rubber coated – it feels good. The shape provides a very secure grip – especially with the shape of the hand guard. The is even a hole in the handle to lash it to a stick.
The blade goes full tang. The knife came sharp – but not razor sharp. The edge was certainly fine for utility work. How well will the edge hold up? Time will tell. I did some chopping work with the blade on a 2×4 and found no discernible decrease in sharpness. On one side of the blade – there are deep serrations which are very sharp. For me – I do not find these serve much purpose other than possibly cutting rope. They are too short to do any serious sawing with. The sawing I did was successful as long as I pulled the knife in one direction rather than a back and fourth sawing action. Rather than saw I would rather chop – unless some small detailed work was needed. The blade is 440 stainless steel and has a black oxide coating – which is attractive.
The sheath does what it is supposed to do – hold the knife securely on your belt. There are no MOLLE straps on it nor any way to attach a leg strap. It is not the greatest sheath in the world – but at this price point – it is fine.
Balance and overall feel is very good. This knife is not light as its full tang construction provides plenty of stainless steel.
Overall: Great value. I have waiting to this point to tell you the cost – $19.99 with Free Shipping through Amazon.com. I have to be honest – what a great deal. Great addition to your belt hiking or hunting as well as stuffing it in your bug out bag. I know I have found a new partner on my next river walk.
Here are a few pictures:
I am not sure a better value can be found. If you are interested in purchasing one – here is the Amazon link.
Take care -

Not a bad find. I’ve been needing something to throw into a 72 hour bag I keep in my car.

Have you looked at mora knives? They are cheaper and the carbon steel knives are built like tanks! Cut up plenty of game with them, and they are still as sharp as the day I bough them!

The reason they’re so cheap is because thy were made in China.

$19.99, huh? Well, like my granddaddy always told me, “you get what you pay for.” I’ll just go with Buck, or certain Kershaws.

i second the Mora knives. dirt cheap and tough as nails.
In folders, my choice has always been Spyderco. I have 5 of them.
My fixed blade is a Bob Dozier i picked up used. Sweeeeet.

Just bought one at Academy for $16.99. Very nice for the price. Later on I want the SOG Seal Pup..about $71 on Amazon with a great sheath.

I agree 100% with floridacracker. Stay away from all these cheap, crap blades. They are a 100% guarantee to let you down when you need them the most. Either get 10 moras and one good axe (gransfors, wetterlings, even a fiscars) to cover your basic cutting tool needs; or spend the money and get the very warm glow in the pit of your MAN stomach with a custom handmade, usa made knife. Stridder, Randall, Relentless, etc. etc. I once pride open a few hinges and locks with a strider knife in my military career. Didn’t even put a chip in the blade. It will last you a life time. Cheap knives will cost you more in the long run. Either your life or buying them over and over again.
