Kindle for Survival?

Kindle Survival Information Tool

Information is important for long-term survival. I have written before about storing files on external hard drives, USB flash-drives, as well as DVD’s. These are all viable methods for retaining and accessing information after TSHTF. One of the issues surrounding all of these is the need for a computer in order to access the information. No computer – no information.

Recently the Kindle electronic book reader has come on the scene and become very popular with its ability to hold many books, quick access, portability, and lightweight. Initially very expensive – prices have really dropped.

So – what does this have to do with survival & preparedness? The newest Kindle electronic book reader has the capability of storing and displaying PDF files. If you are unaware – there are literally millions of files (articles, books, military manuals, and more) that are in the PDF format. Many are available right here at this site.

The Kindle is a fantastic platform for carrying thousands of survival & preparedness PDF files in a very small (8.5 oz) and easily accessible manner. It has a very long battery life and with the grid up – has built in Wi-Fi capability. The latest version has Internet browsing capability as well.

Having the ability to access reference manuals on medical treatments, survival manuals, “how to” guides, even automobile repair manuals – could prove to be extremely beneficial.

I imagine that for a long-term survival situation – a small solar adapter could be rigged up to recharge the batteries (which can last in-excess of 3 weeks).

A couple of drawbacks to using the Kindle to store your survival library is the loss of all of your data if the unit is damaged in some way, as well as should the unit develop a “bug” or have some sort of short. However – to be honest the prices are dropping so low now that you could have a backup Kindle locked away (EMP protected) just-in-case.

The all-new Kindle is available for as low at $139.00 with free 2 day shipping.

I do not have a Kindle – yet. I am seriouly considering it though. I love modern technology and often look at ways that in an off-grid situation being able to utilize technology to my advantage.

Any thoughts?

The PDF capability is the main reason I bought my wife a Barnes & Nobel ‘Nook’. That and the ability to add memory (with PDF’s downloaded from my computer). Both will hold about 1500 books!

Great tool…as long as you have a ‘backup’ in case you lose the ability to access it through power surge, emp, dropping it in a puddle, technical glitch, etc…. Use and enjoy the convenience of PDF books…but have a paper and ink backup just in case.
