Interview: M.D. Creekmore of The Survivalist Blog

M.D. Creekmore from The Survivalist Blog was nice enough to grant me the interview below. The Survivalist Blog is one of the most popular survival & preparedness blogs on the Internet. I have been following Creekmore’s writings for quite some time. He offers sound advice that can be usefull to everyone…..even those – like most of us – that are economically challenged. He also has written an excellant “survival guide” as a free e-book that I highly recommend – see it here.

Rourke: How did you get involved in survival & preparedness?

M.D. Creekmore: I’ve been homeless on several occasions the first time was in the 1970′s when my mother lost her job and we had to live in a car for three or four months. Later we lived in a tent.

My mother was great, she worked hard doing the best she could but my father was a drunk and never worked – always taking from my mother and I. She was afraid to leave because he was abusive and threatened to harm both of us if she ever did.

I think those childhood events set the stage for my involvement in survival & preparedness. As a child I vowed to do better. Later I started reading Mother Earth News magazines someone had given my mother. I read those things over and over.

Rourke: What motivated you to start your blog?

M.D. Creekmore: Reading other blogs that gave survival advice costing hundreds of thousands of dollars. I knew 95% of those reading could not afford such an investment and needed help preparing on a budget. That is what my survival blog is about.

Rourke: You live “off-grid” – can you describe how you are doing that?

M.D. Creekmore: It’s difficult to describe in such a short amount of space, but I’ll do my best. Power comes from a cheap solar set-up and generator. Heat for cooking and warming the trailer (I live in a 26 ft travel trailer) comes from propane and wood. Refrigeration is by propane, as is hot water for the sinks and shower. Water comes from a spring.

Rourke: What is your opinion on the economy today and where we are heading?

M.D. Creekmore: We currently have a national dept of over $13,189,025,112,142.79 with that dept increasing an average of $4.12 billion per day since September 28, 2007! With a population of 308,709,355, each man, woman and child’s share of this debt is $42,723.11.

The U.S. has spent, promised and borrowed itself into such a hole I don’t think we can dig back out. We are spending more money than we make, in what amounts to charging it to a credit card with no way to pay off the debt. We can’t keep adding $4.12 billion per day to the national debt without drastic consequence.

No one can predict the future, but I think it prudent to hedge your assets by investing in land, junk silver coins, ammo and emergency supplies. Hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

Rourke: I have seen more stories is in the main stream press about the new “modern” survivalists – regular everyday people that are starting to store extra food and buy guns. What is opening peoples eyes?

M.D. Creekmore: I think people are beginning to see things as they really are – not as they are told by the media.

Rourke: What role do firearms play in survival & preparedness?

M.D. Creekmore: Foraging and self-defense.

Rourke: What do you think is the most significant threat to this country today – short term versus long term?

M.D. Creeekmore: Short term, I’d have to say natural disaster. Long term, a moral a decay of the population. And a whole bunch of other stuff in between.

Rourke: For those that are now just thinking about preparedness – what is advice on where to start?

M.D. Creekmore: Read this (print it out) and go to your nearest Wal-Mart, K-mart or other mart.

Rourke: What are the top 6 most important categories of survival/preparedness supplies?

M.D. Creekmore:

1. Water – storage, filters, purification etc.
2. Food – storage and methods of resupply.
3. Shelter – including housing and proper clothing.
4. Medical – kits and knowledge.
5. Tools – needed for self-reliance, wood cutting, gardening etc.
6. Firearms – for foraging and self defense.

Rourke: Do you have a target or goal in mind that once reached – you will feel a sense of completion with your blog?

M.D. Creekmore: It’s never complete and will always be a work in progress.

Rourke: On your “About” page it states that you do emergency preparedness consulting. Can you tell me how that works?

M.D. Creekmore: Consulting is a new area for me and I’m still working out the details – in the near future I plan to have a worksheet clients can fill out – from this I will draw up a personal survival plan for each based on their answers.

When you think about it I’ve been consulting readers of my blog for several years.

Rourke: Any future projects with your blog that you have planned that you would like to mention?

M.D. Creekmore: Just to keep doing what I’ve been doing only do it better.

Rourke:  Looking forward to it and thank you.

I highly recommend that you make your way over to The Survivalist Blog- and browse through the archieves.

Happy reading!!!

Thanks for this interview! I’ve been a fan of M.D.’s for quite a while but never knew his whole survival story. It’s true that the uphill parts of our lives are what make us stronger.
