Interesting weekend…….
This past weekend was eventful.
Had a short but very violent storm blow through Friday night. Estimated winds according to the news was 60 mph – but they seemed stronger. I have not seen wind like that since Hurricane Hugo. Lots of tree’s down, damage to garden, stuff blown everywhere – then the power went out. Was out for 14 hours. Again – longest power outage I have seen since Hugo.
Having the power out for 14 hours pretty much sucked – especially in this heat (in the Southeast). When the power went out family started scrambling – of course I have about 50 flashlights – so handed them out. Once neighbor was just getting home from a beach trip – so gave them one. Kids got bored pretty quick – hooked up one of my inverters to my Blazer ZR2′s battery and got a TV and DVD player running, along with a box fan. I started the Blazer up about once per hour and let it run a little to recharge the battery. Worked well.
Taught me something – I need a generator as well as a better set up for the inverters. It’s on my list of things to do….to accomplish. We do not lose power much so other items of preparedness have taken priority. Bottom line – a generator has moved up the list towards the top.
Garden took a pretty hard hit from the storm. lots of stuff laying on the ground. I carefully stood tomato’s back up and had to re-stake them. Overall I think no serious garden damage. I am surprised to be honest with you.
Sometimes it takes an event like that to “rekindle” and re-energize the motivation to prepare and keep it in your mind. Sometimes I watch certain movies or TV shows to help with that as well.
Well…..hurricane season is on us now. This should be interesting.
Take care all -
Rourke
