Health, Fitness and Survival
Like most people – I would like to be in better shape. I have spent most of my life involved in the martial arts and weight lifting. As a teenager I was very into bodybuilding and even went to college studying nutrition – I wanted to be a sports trainer. To sum it up – I know what I am doing when it comes to exercise and nutrition – it’s just a matter of getting it done.
I just joined back to my local YMCA and have gone to a few “getting back into it” sessions and will be increasing the intensity soon. Being 40 years old and having had a couple of semi-serious sports injuries over the past 3 years while grappling and playing basketball – I am very patient starting out.
I feel being fit is an important part of survival. In a potential survival situation your body and mind could become subjected to numerous stresses – from physical altercations, running, limited food intake, etc. The better shape you are in the better you will be able to handle the physical-nature of many situations. Mental stresses can be the most draining of all. I think high intensity workouts, forms of competition, and martial arts can assist in dealing with high stress situations. Honestly – beyond tactical training – I don’t think much else is going to prepare you for the stresses involved in a tactical situation.
Anyways – my plan:
-
resistance training 3x per weeek
-
P90x 2X per week
-
stickfighting every Tuesday night
-
limit caloric intake to 2200 calories per day (high protein, medium carbs, low fat)
Ryan over at the Total Survivalist Libretarian Rantfest told me about Crossfit – which after a little research sounds like a perfect fitness program – just what I was looking for. Looked for one near my area and found that it was too far away and quite expensive. Would like to get into some running – but have always sucked at it. I can go forever on a stationary bike – but jog for 5 minutes and I am sucking wind. Been a long time since I have tried – so I think I will give it a shot. Hopefully my knee’s will hold up and my back won’t start bothering me.
Maybe I will update my progress here once in a while.
Update #1: Sucks getting older………..
