As a mother of three children, I strongly believe that our generation, more than any other generation in our history, must bear the burden of passing on to younger generations the preservation of liberty and a strong belief in the values that this country was founded on. If this country is going to survive the ever increasing assault on our freedoms and the impending economic catastrophe that is coming this way, it will do so because of the people who stood fast in their beliefs and took the necessary steps to meet life’s challenges head on.
Our Founding Fathers understood the need for self-reliance, and this fact is demonstrated by the United States Constitution, which is largely dependent upon man’s ability to self-govern and the need to accept personal responsibility for one’s own actions. Self-reliance is a person’s chance to take control of their life and display leadership – all without the need for government intervention! Assuming control of our lives by being self-reliant opens up to us real opportunities to expand our horizons, to explore the life we want to live, and gives us the chance to discover the true meaning of life, which, to me, is to be in a position to help others whenever possible.
I also feel that our experiences along the way to becoming self-reliant open our eyes to new possibilities and give us the courage to explore new, more innovative ways of doing things. Being prepared allows us to fight the good fight when the need arises and gives us the resilience to keep going when things get a little tough.
Our Founding Fathers also understood what patriotism is all about – an undying love for your country, which encompasses the ability to freely express one’s opinion without fear of government retribution and an open willingness to embrace a sense of pride and love for the values and freedoms that have helped shape the greatest country in the world. The greatness of this country is evident time and time again throughout the pages of history. Regardless of the type of devastation or conflicts we have experienced, the people of this country have united as a nation and have stood in alliance with each other. This type of devotion helps us to succeed and thrive as a country, and I want to do whatever is necessary to help preserve those values because, in my view, they truly are worth fighting for.
Without a doubt there is stormy weather ahead, and the need to have our houses in order is paramount, which is why I have chosen to be as prepared in every area as I possibly can be. While the thought of living off the grid can be a daunting one, and one that I am still in the process of pursuing, I have found that if I tackle one area at a time, things seem a little less challenging. While I do not profess to have any special expertise in any certain area at this point, I have truly enjoyed learning new things and expanding my personal independence, and I hope I can be an inspiration to someone who is just embarking on their path to self-reliance.
I recently came upon this quote from Epictetus, a Roman philosopher who lived from 55-135 A.D., which I thought was worth remembering: “The Foundation of Excellence: Tentative efforts lead to tentative outcomes. Therefore, give yourself fully to your endeavors. Decide to construct your characteristics through excellent actions and determine to pay the price of a worthy goal. The trials you encounter will introduce you to your strengths. Remain steadfast, and one day you will build something that endures which is worthy of your potential.”
I have truly come to believe that being as prepared and self-reliant as possible is the only way to live, and I hope to pass those ideals on to my children and the rest of my family and friends. While it is still a ways off into the future, I am looking forward to the day when I can say that I am now so independent and courageous that I can live “off the grid.” And that, in a nutshell, is why I prepare!
