From the Desk of John Rourke – May 28th, 2015

I have found Facebook as a very useful tool for finding great deals on used stuff. I belong to several area groups targeting general merchandise or firearms. Keeping an eye on deals will bring up a great bargain once in a while. Don’t use Facebook? No problem. That is a choice everyone makes for themselves.

Appreciate the responses to my question about Rock Island 1911’s. I am not a huge fan of 1911’s but saw one at my local shop and it caught my eye. I believe this is the model:

I have owned a Kimber and a Para but am just so used to polymer frame pistols I have continued to stay loyal to them. But hey -I am not opposed to expanding my horizons.

The recent article on “Rugged Vehicles” sure did generate a lot of discussion which is great. Capt. mentioned mountain bikes. I own four mountain bikes plus a road bike. Great mode of local transportation without the need for fuel other than calories for energy.

Another fantastic mode of transportation is the use of mopeds/scooters. These things are inexpensive and get incredible gas mileage. When a gallon of gas is a rare commodity being able to travel 50-80 miles with it certainly is beneficial.

  1. Have you ever considered Khar Arms. I’ve really been impressed with the way it fits my hand since I have big hands. It’s well balanced, there is no safety, and is designed by one of the co-creators of Glock. The designer wanted to create another pistol that was not all plastic. She he left Glock and started Khar Arms Again, it has no safety mechanism. You are the safety which means you need good holster that will not allow the trigger to be pulled. Many people are not comfortable with that idea. Most .45’s require you to firmly grip up on the safety for the handle. So, in my mind if you get jumped by some thugs, you grab your pistol, and if you don’t grab it..juuuuusst right. No fire. I’m not comfortable with that idea when my adrenaline is pumping. I’m hunting for a used Khar that will hopefully be around 350 or under range. Not holding my breath…meh. Me and the whole “used” thing..lol

I have a .40 now, but I want a .45 with all these nut jobs running around now a days. I’ve been contemplating a .45 for almost 6 months now and then those terrorists attacked us in Texas with rifles, (doh!). I want something that will knock people like that down hard, immediately, and for good.

  2. I’m a big fan of 1911s and have an STI Spartan V myself. It is a poor mans competition pistol. I love it. I have always thought about getting a Rock Island 1911. Not sure about the one with the rail on the bottom. Had a buddy who had a Taurus 1911 with a rail and he said it was extremely difficult to find a holster of any type. This was several years ago and things may have changed. Just my 2 cents.
