From the Desk of John Rourke – December 9th, 2014

Life without cable or satellite is coming up on 1 year. I have no regrets whatsoever. I am going to write up a post soon on how I did it and what I have done since to provide entertainment & news – and how the rest of the family have dealt. I will say that getting local channels was made easy by my purchase of an HD antenna. This model bought on Amazon for less than $40 a year ago has worked great.   I only have it 5 feet of the ground and get a variety of channels. I want to get another and mount it n my roof which will likely double the number of channels received.

The movie Divergent has been popular with teens and young adults but there is a message within the story. I think it was a great movie and personal freedom – or lack thereof as well as an over controlling government is a huge component of the story.

Going to grill out some burgers tonight. Man, love the smell of burgers cooking on the grill. Throw on some grilled onions and bacon…..tasty!

The US National Debt just passed 18 trillion dollars. Wonderful.

So – President Obama will appear on BET (Black Entertainment Television). Disgraceful. I consider groups and organizations like BET racists. Obama also states that racism is “deeply rooted” in our society. You know why? Because of people like him that look at people and pass judgement based on their skin color instead of facts.

  1. Booker T. Washington said it best:

“There is another class of coloured people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs – partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs.”

  2. Looking forward to your write up about leaving cable. My wife and I are investigating our options. $85 a month is ridiculous when all we watch is about 5 channels.

  3. Our family cut the cable 4 years ago…NO regrets. Amazing how much time is wasted watching junk on TV. HD antenna works just fine to get all the basics…for FREE. More time together, time to get things done and money saved. Like I said, no regrets.

  4. It’s been about 20 years since I had cable t.v. I use a converter box to watch Mystery on PBS and Supernatural on CW, that’s it. I just signed up for a free month of Netflix and haven’t even used it, so probably won’t get it. There’s just too much to do for me to be wasting time on t.v. I guess my motto is “Redeem the time”.

  5. I have always been keen to notice the messages with stories or movies etc. Many see them as strictly fantasy but fail to see the realities or how things are moving in the direction of what you often see in movies. Many current events today make me remember certain movies I had watched that are now common place or unfolding. Some cool and some scary.

    • Thanks Badger359. I go back and watch some older movies and see things differently in them. I guess perspective has changed as have I.

  6. Good for you Rourke and others-my husband LOVES cable channels -the only one I would miss is The Weather channel. Do you get your news and weather from your computer ? Arlene

    • I have an HD antenna and can get local stations for news and weather. With that said if I want to know the weather a weather radio works as well as looking on the computer or cell phone.

  7. I killed my cable a year and a half ago saving $75 a month. I do have netflixe but mostly for my daughter. Gotta have my internet though but will survive if it disappears. I have a basic inside antenna and get quite a few channels. May upgrade to the outdoor “shark fin” style to see what channels I can get then.

I’ve always said the Life follows science fiction. 1984 is a scary example. Interesting times are coming.
