Freeze Dried Foods – Taste Test

Font Size » Large | Small

Freeze dried foods have long been the “premium storage food” for the survivalist. My food storage program has consisted of storing what I eat and eating what I store. I have never tried freeze dried food before although it was planned. I recently bought a pack of Mountain House Freeze Dried foods – Scrambled Eggs and Bacon.

A little info on freeze dried foods:

  • Freeze dried foods typically come packaged in pouches or cans.
  • Pouches have a shelf life of around 7 years or more – depending upon storage conditions.
  • Cans have a shelf life of 25+ years – depending upon storage conditions.
  • Freeze dried foods are prepared simply – add boiling water then stir.

Something of importance – freeze dried food is more expensive than the same thing “fresh” or in a can. Your paying a premium for the storage capability.

Well, back to my scrambled eggs and bacon. I got the pouch out and read the directions:

Next – I boiled the water and added it to the pouch – and stirred. Very shortly I could smell what…..smelt like….eggs and bacon!!!!!  Honestly – it smelt pretty good. I sealed the bag up per directions and left it for about 5 minutes. When I reopened the bag there was quite a bit of excess water left over – so I poured it out.

The instructions say you can eat out of the bag – but I poured the contents into a bowl.

At this point I was pretty impressed. Looks just like eggs I would make myself – with bacon bits mixed in.

I placed a fork in the bowl – and figured my oldest son would be a guinea pig. I called to him and asked him if he wanted scrambled eggs and bacon – and not surprisingly he said “sure”. I brought it to him and watched him take a bite – he didn’t throw up and took another. He said he liked them. He did not know they were freeze dried. That was a positive sign. I tried it myself and they tasted great – a little salty – but just like eggs.

Here is a video of my son when I asked him about the eggs.

I have been hesitant to start purchasing freeze dried food – but this is a positive sign for me and will start soon.

““premium storage food” for the survivalist”… I like that.

Like you, I try to EWIS and SWIE but I found some Mountain House pouches on sale so I tried them. I think they were noodles and chicken, rise and chicken, and Stroganoff w/Beef & Noodles. They were all very salty. The nutrition information on the package shows they provide half to three quarters of your recommended daily intake. They were good and very easy to prepare.

The long shelf life is certainly a nice thing but they remain out of my price range.
