More awesome SHTF “Go To” guns…….

A Glock 21 inside my ‘business camo’ briefcase.

Why a Glock 21? I’ve always loved the .45ACP, and if I can carry something that holds 13+1 of those dandy little critters? I’m all for it.

(Yes, I should have used a pencil to trace around the lines of the ‘pick & pluck foam’ instead of a permanent marker. ”Old to soon…smart too late” as my grandfather used to say.)

Inside the briefcase I have my:

Boker Plus Cop Tool (for prying)
Garmin eTrex Legend GPSr (older model…but still works great.)
Leatherman SuperTool (I always have my Leatherman Wave on me…this is a backup.)
Leatherman pocket knife (I always have a pocket knife of some sort on me…currently the Buck Tarani Strider.)
Mini-Mag light with the LED conversion (I always have at least one or two LED lights on me.)
(4) AA batteries
Silicone shooting ear plugs (Just in case things get too loud.)
Extra magazine for the G21 (Just in case things get too wild.)

With it zippered shut I look just like an average businessman blending with the crowd.

Attached is my SHTF and daily carry gun. Besides being a great looking firearm, it’s a 1911; what’s more to say? I have dozens of weapons from AR-15′s, revolvers, shotguns and other pistols and this is what I carry and look to daily in any moment. I have fired and used Glocks, Sigs and other popular brands, and for me personally, I can shoot faster and more accurately with a 1911 than any other. I have had zero malfunctions with this 1911 after 1000′s of rounds and never have to worry about “is it going to fire?”. Of course, some circumstances dictate the use of other types of firearms, but this is what I grab for anything up close and personal.

Its not your usual “go to” weapon of choice or caliber but at 1200 fps my entry is a GAMO Bigcat Air rifle. I purchased the air rifle for $129.00 and I get 1000 rounds for $11.00 thus making it easy to stock up on ammunition.

This air rifle is an excellent tool for securing small game like rabbits, squirrels, raccoon’s, etc…without using your more expensive ammunition.

What if Obama is reelected?

[Note from Rourke: I really, really struggled writing this.]

This is not going to be an anti-democrat or anti-liberal post. I am merely asking the question and giving a few thoughts. I am un-apologetically conservative.

So – will Obama be reelected? My answer – I have no idea.

There are so many differing beliefs on the government, politicians, Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians, Independents, Congress, etc. I have heard many opinions regarding President Obama from this sites readers as well as many of my friends.

Again – the question is “What if Obama is reelected?”

For many across the United States the answer is – “It really doesn’t mater.” There are those that believe that there are really no differences between Democrats or Republicans - they are politicians and are nothing more than corporate representatives rather than representatives for the people. They pass laws and create policy which benefits those in power and large corporations. Many call these people “the Elite”. For this group President Obama is merely the figure head of a larger group of powerful people whose agenda is not in-line with the best interests of the people of this country.

Another school of thought comes from those that – depending on your perspective – would be called “Conspiracy Theorists”. These people believe that President Obama is pure evil or close to it. They feel that he has had and will continue to have an agenda to spread socialism and governmental dependence on as many people as possible.

Of course – President Obama has his supporters. Liberals and Democrats support him and want him to do more in the realm of additional social programs and laws. A large percentage of the United States population agrees with his stance on abortion, gun control, foreign affairs, and his “tax the rich” and “spreading the wealth” ideals. Those terms may not sit with many that are in agreement with him. Many feel that his actions with wanting to tax higher income people at a higher rate is just fair. Gun control is certainly one of which supports are not pleased with his performance.

The opposite of the above are most mainstream Republicans and Conservatives. They believe if President Obama is reelected he will not stand for them and their beliefs. They have beliefs such as being pro-life, pro-gun rights, smaller government and less government intrusion in peoples lives. Tea Party members are generally on the far right of this category.

These are certainly not all the beliefs about Obama or our government. What is the truth? What really will the result be should Obama be reelected? Of course no one knows for sure – but I do have a few thoughts.

First – I think the truth is a combination of all the above schools of thought. I do not believe Obama is pure evil however I certainly do not agree with many of his policies and beliefs. Take away all the rhetoric and look at the facts – he and Congress have grown this government at an unprecedented accelerated rate. Debt ceilings continue to be increased. Mandatory healthcare (unless your a big union company and can get a free pass) is beginning to become a reality along with all of the changes involved both good and bad.

Second – The vast majority of ALL politicians in this country are corrupt. They rule by looking at polls and other devices that measure voting peoples opinions. They tell half-truths and take statements out of context and use these as facts to promote an agenda fueled by money and lobbyists.

Third – If Obama is reelected – the debt will continue to grow at a larger pace than if a Republican was elected. Regardless – the debt will grow. If Obama is reelected I believe his more radical ideals will become evident as his quest for reelection would not be in the way. Gun Control will likely become a major target for the Obama Administration as well as continued changing of tax laws costing most all Americans more money.

Again – let me state for the record…..I am not anti-Democrat. President Obama just happens to be in that party. I do not subscribe to most of the beliefs of the Democrat party. Government is too big. Period. Government at all levels is far too invasive in peoples lives. Fact. Taxes are too high – for everyone. There are far too many laws and restrictions on business. It’s not just the President but Congress as well – for many years.

It is just crazy.

So – I have to go back to the original question – What if President Obama is reelected?

You actually know what a 3 Sisters Garden is.
You have internally debated with yourself on whether or not you could eat your pet.
You have thought about places to bury your mono vault.
You no longer have time to look at all the cool prepping websites you have found while surfing the web.
You scratch your head in curiosity and think WTF?! when you see preppers on TV.
You know the silver content of your coins.
You can name, off the top of your head, more than 4 companies that sell long-term food in #10 cans.
You read the descriptions of each model of Berkey Water Filters at least 6 times before you purchased.
You own a Berkey and you still read the descriptions.
Deep down inside you always wonder if zombies are real…or at least wish they were.

Preparedness Book Review: Dirt-Cheap Survival Retreat

I read Creekmore’s survival blog every so often – some good stuff. His book was released some time ago and for whatever I just didn’t buy it. Recently the price had dropped on Amazon and when placing an order I decided to go ahead and pick it up. It arrived a couple weeks ago – I read it – and here is what I think.

It was great.

OK – reviews over. No – not quite yet.

Dirt-Cheap Survival Retreat is not a long book at 88 pages. As the title so aptly gives away this short but content-filled book covers Creekmore’s experience and recommendations in putting together a “dirt-cheap survival retreat”. Although I am not in any position to relocate nor buy a piece of land and set up shop – I found this book very educational. I do have plans in the future and advice and instructions Creekmore puts forth are great. M.D. writes to the point and just tells it like it is.

Dirt-Cheap Survival Retreat describes the process of buying cheap land, an inexpensive trailer which to live in, set up a simple power generation system, security, food and water, as well as waste disposal. I particularly enjoyed the chapters on power-generation and security. What is described is not overly complex nor expensive. In particular the section on solar is probably the best laid out explanation I have ever seen as to how a simple system is put together. Unlike many other books I have read – security is not the typical “defend yourself against hordes of zombies” and be armed to the teeth.

I believe the methods described in Dirt-Cheap Survival Retreat could truly be followed by anyone.

Excellent and worth the money. Highly recommended.

Survival Food: Thoughts on upcoming spring garden……

Main Garden

Over the past 8 years I have worked to learn about gardening and prepare for a time when a garden will be necessary to help provide nourishment for my family. It has been rewarding and fun – but very difficult at times. Gardening has become more popular over the past few years as seeds are less expensive than the full grown grocery store alternative. Flavor of garden grown produce is incredible as well. The advantages and reasons to have a garden are many. I have had my main garden as well as raised beds covered with plastic for the past few months. Covered to kill off weeds and other unwanted vegetation. This past weekend I removed the plastic off the main garden and am curious to see how successful my efforts into ridding the garden of weeds will be. Anyways – February is here and planting time for most crops in my area are but 2-3 months away. Have a few things on my mind and starting to plan my gardens. On my small piece of property I have 5 gardens:

Main Garden – approx 40′ x 25′
Raised Bed #1 – 4′ x 8′ raised bed
Raised Bed #2 – 4′ x 8′ raised bed
Raised Bed #3 – L-shaped raised bed
Raised Bed #4 – 4′ x 10′ raised bed

Main Garden: I will start planting lettuce in Main Garden in several weeks. One row provides all we need. Other crops in the Main Garden will follow every week or so until all is planted. I like to stagger my planting times to get longevity out of each garden. Crops planted here include cucumbers, tomato’s, crookneck squash, zucchini, and peppers.

Raised Bed #1: A variety of plants are packed into these 12 square feet. A couple tomato plants (cherry tomato’s especially), pepper’s, climbing cucumbers, and maybe an eggplant or two.

Raised Bed #2: Dedicated to blackberries and blueberries. This will be the second season for this bed – hoping I will get some fruit this year.

Raised Bed #3: One section is dedicated to green beans and sugar-snap peas. Another used for cucumbers, peppers, and whatever I feel like at the time.

Raised Bed #4: Strawberries – nothing but strawberries. This will be the second season and hoping for some ripe fruit.

This year I am going to take measures to store away some seeds (mostly non-hybrid), as well as other gardening supplies such as fertilizers. Although I plan to package and store some seeds myself – for redundancy I will likely pick up an Emergency Seed Bank. Gardening tools is another area I need to improve in. An expansion in my tools is needed and I would like to pick up a used tiller. Currently I borrow a couple of tillers from neighbors.
