Equipment Review: HC3R Ruger 10/22 Magazine

Higher capacity aftermarket magazines for the Ruger 10/22 have been hit or miss for many years. With the release of the factory Ruger BX-25 magazine, 10/22 owners finally had a reliable higher-than-standard capacity magazine available to them. I honestly felt that there would be no more non-Ruger magazines produced as how could they possibly compete.

Enter the HC3R Ruger 10/22 Magazine. This magazine offers a very unique design in that not only does it have the capability to hold 25 .22LR rounds – but it can also house an additional 20 rounds to be loaded via a “stripper clip”. Fantastic concept.

On a recent trip to my bug out location in Georgia – I tested the HC3R magazine – and came away extremely impressed.

Over the years I have had numerous Butler Creek, Eagle, and Ram-Line 10/22 magazines and to be perfectly honest – they all pretty much sucked.

Appearance:

The HC3R exudes quality from top to bottom. Smooth lines, no machine marks, and everything fits.

Fit and Function:

The HC3R fits perfectly into the magazine well of all three of my Ruger 10/22’s. Unique to the HC3R’s design is a button on the side of the magazine which you can depress to remove spring tension off of the follower to allow easy loading as round count get up there. It works perfectly. Once the magazine has 12 or more rounds the effort required to load the next round really begins to increase. This button allows you to remove a little pressure and slide the round in easily. This saves your thumb after loading 25 rounds – and possible damage to the casing.

At the range the magazine performed flawlessly. Not much else to say. I shot in excess of 250 rounds through one of my 10/22’s and it worked fantastic. I shot CCI Mini-Mag’s throughout the test – my favorite round. I highly commend the manufacturer for designing this magazine with metal feed lips. This should allow it to perform for years to come.

20 Rounds on Board:

Great idea is that the magazine has a slot behind a removable “stripper clip” which you can insert an extra 20 rounds to be held securely until needed. To access those rounds – the stripper clip can be removed from the magazine once empty – filled via the 20 rounds on board, and then placed back into the magazine. This takes some practice as the first few times I tried did not work so well. Once the technique is down – no issues.

  1. THANK YOU!!
I have been looking for 25 round clips for my Ruger 10/22 and they are rarer than hens teeth.
The fact that these are MADE by Ruger makes it that much better and I really like the extra stripper clip feature.
I just ordered one and will be getting more soon. Now if I could just find some bullets to put in it….

  3. FWIW: Be aware of mags with open/cutouts that display the rounds. Dirt can get in there and cause problems. Probably OK if you just practicing at the range, but not recommend in other situations where you are depending on the rifle to function properly.

  4. Update: I got a notice of indefinite backorder a few days after placing my order. Not the best business practice to list and sell merchandise that they don’t even have on hand.

I wrote back to them and never got a further reply. Hate companies that operate like that.
