EMP Attack – Are You Ready?

Font Size » Large | Small

Having read the book One Second After, one of my biggest fears is an EMP attack.

What is EMP? In extreme layman’s terms  – a nuclear weapon is exploded at high altitude and the explosion sends out an electronic pulse that can have a significant effect on any unprotected electronic equipment. What is the effect? Damage up to and including making the device inoperable.

Opinions vary on exactly what the effect of EMP would be on modern electronics. The severity of the damage depends on many factors such as altitude, power of the weapon itself, and location of the burst. What does appear to be commonly believed is that an EMP attack on the United States at a minimum would prove to be a disaster the likes of which this country has never seen. Within the area surrounding the blast – much of the electronics would be taken out of commission. Imagine an area – at a minimum – covering 1/4 the size of the country – brought back to a large extent to the horse and buggy days.

Hurricane Katrina caused a huge spike in fuel prices. That caused an increase in the prices of many goods and services. Just imagine the effect of a minimal EMP attack on the country. Cars not running, no power, refrigerators and freezers off, hospitals without power – and no goods and services being transported anywhere at anytime.

Think about it. Really think about it. Talk about TEOTWAWKI (The End of the World as we Know It)  – I think an EMP attack would qualify.

Here is a short video that summarizes the possibilities of an EMP attack:

So – what do you do to prepare?

It is all about shielding your electronics from the pulse. Understand that the pulse goes thru some material easily – while other materials provide some resistance. One example of this would be to take a small Netbook computer ad place it in a metal box. As long as that device does not touch any of the metal (possibly enclosing it in some type of soft case) – the metal box would provide some protection. If you took the metal box holding your Netbook and placed in a gun safe – that would be additional protection.

This device of sheilding is often called a Faraday Cage. An ideal Faraday cage is made of thicker material – such as aluminum or copper.

I have decided to add an EMP page to my Downloads section of this site due to the importance of this potential disaster. I will be adding information available for free downloading within the next few days.

How likely is an EMP attack?  Tough to say but I think it is more likely than most government officials would be willing to admit. Much more likely than an asteroid impact, solar flare, or alien invasion.

Anyone made any preps related to EMP?

Take care all-

Rourke
