Creating a raised bed garden

Rourke: This post originally appeared HERE on ModernSurvivalOnline.com.

I recently made a second raised bed garden to add to my fruit and vegetable growing capabilities. Living in a typical suburban neighborhood my space is limited. In this particular case I built this raised bed for blueberry and blackberry plants.

Supplies ready.

Blueberries ready for planting.

I purchased some blueberry plants at SAM’s – hoping they survive the project.

All side boards are cut – ready to get screwed together.
2×4 cut into sections for corner support.
All 4 sides connected.

My incredible wood-working skills at play…..I made a box!!

2×4 pieces screwed in corners for support.

To provide great rigidity the 2″x4″ pieces are installed into each corner.

Done!!!!!

I added a variety of peat moss, composted cow manure and top soil to the raised bed – and planted the blueberries. I use rain water from my rain barrel to water the plants whenever possible. Also – to raise the acidity of the soil – I am going to mulch the bed with pine needles. Hopefully next year I will have fresh blueberries.

Raised beds provide some great advantages to your gardening efforts (more later in another post).

Take care all –

  1. Also, don’t throw your coffee grounds in the compost pile, put them around the blueberry bushes…. They will act as mulch and raise the pH. If you have rabbits, you will want to build chicken wire cages to put around your berry plants or you will have beautiful plants, no berries and very fat wild bunnies…. he he… know that from experience. Ever thought of making some money as “Rent a Handyman for a Day”? You did an excellent job on your raised bed.

  2. I currently have 8 raised beds 6 of them are 4×8 and 2 of them are 4×4. Four of the 4×8 are made from concrete block I like them better then the wood they last longer and allow companion planting in the spaces in each block.

  3. Be very careful where you get your source of vermiculite as some of it can have asbestos in it and breathing it in can be very dangerous. I used to work in a green house. Asbestos can cause mesothelioma -its the only thing that does cause this fatal cancer of the lining of the lungs, and all other organs. Arlene
