Compost Gardening – Book Review
I love gardening and feel it is a very valuable tool for any long term survival situation. It is also a fantastic way to save money – and enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables on a daily basis.
Soil quality is so important to gardening. Plants suck the nutrients out of the soil as they grow and need to be replenished. One method of replenishing nutrients into the soil is by composting.
Composting is very easy and requires just a little work. It also can be done year round.
Always wanting to learn more about gardening – I ordered Compost Gardening from Amazon.com. A hardcover book with over 300 pages – this book is packed with information. Lots of full color glossy photographs make turning each page a more attractive prospect.
For those not familiar with composting: Composting is the mixing of organic matter – such as leaves, discarded fruit/vegetable matter, and manure - used to improve soil structure and provide nutrients. Basically – composting is where you pile up a bunch of stuff you would normally throw away like lettuce, leaves, grass clipping, vegetable peels, and apple cores – and you let the stuff rot and break down.
Back to the book. Compost Gardening approaches composting right from the basics for the beginner. The first chapter “Gardening in Garbage” really engages the reader by explaining the process of composting. From the “6 Basic Rules of Compost Gardening” to “Why compost?” – very clear and concise explanations are provided. The book continues with more sections such as “Balancing Browns and Greens” , “Leaves and Pine Straw”, to “Compost Activators” – this book is packed with great information.
There are various descriptions of how to build composting bins and piles, as well as how to incorporate composting into some specific crops.

Best of all – this book is CHEAP!!!! As of this writing you can buy this book new for as little as $4.19 and used for $1.55 (plus shipping of course). Well worth the price.
It is now winter, and most people are not thinking about gardening. Now is a great time to start preparing for spring and a successful season of gardening. What to do? Get going and start composting!! You can also start looking on down the road regarding seeds. Whether it is for this upcoming seasons crops or for storage for the future – check out the Emergency Seed Bank offered by Directive21.com. Long term seed storage – awesome.
Thanks for reading and if you pick up the book – let me know what you think.
