Cheap Prescription Glasses

Font Size » Large | Small

One thing that I have a very difficult time dealing with is being able to see without my glasses. Take my glasses away – and I am in a bad situation. As expensive as spare glasses are – I have not done a good job keeping an extra set. At work I do  have a set of prescription safety glasses which I could use if needed.

I think I might have found the solution.

I was hanging out at one of my favorite forums – HomesteadingToday. While there I saw a post called cheap rx glasses. The post was basically a recommendation for a company called Zenni Optical which sells prescription glasses very inexpensively. I have checked out their website and they have an impressive selection. From the reading I have done – it is recommended that you obtain your prescription via exam, then get measured for your glasses and get those measurements written down. With the measurements you will be able to select the correct size glasses.

I have always wanted to get prescription sunglasses – no better time than the present. I am going to get my eyes checked next week – get my measurements done – an order a couple sets of glasses and see how they turn out.

Anyways – I am pretty excited about this find. I love saving money.

Take care -

Rourke

I would fully agree with you about the need for spare glasses – try living one day without glasses, let alone a lifetime. Another option besides Zenni is to wait for a great sale at a local optical place. I recently got 2 pairs of bifocals (with the line), with frames and fitting to my face, for $207 from Sears Optical, which included UV protection, scratch-resistant lenses and a 1-year guarantee on one of the pairs. Even if I put one of the pairs through a woodchipper 364 days later, I will get a brand new pair for free.

I do hate the line (I’m beginning to get somewhat used to it), but in a couple of months I will get a nicer pair without it, and then have 2 spare sets of glasses.

The good thing about glasses is that if the prescription becomes too out of date, either you can give them to someone you know as a spare pair, or you can donate it to someone who needs it more (I like to put them into a bin for veterans that I see outside of many drug stores and medical buildings).

Thanks for the comment and yyou arre right. I have in the past gone to Visionworks – and see many times they will be having a sale for a complete set of frames and lenses for $79.00. Of course – they are not the most fashionable – but they would work well as a spare.

I am getting my eye exam this week – and planning tto order a couple of pair from Zenni – curious to see how that turns out. If what I get I am not totally satified with – I am going back to Visionworks – and of course keep whatever I get from Zenni as spares.

The best pair of eyeglasses I never purchased was the lasic surgery I got 6 months before going to Iraq. I know it’s not an option for everyone (and I think you posted once that it wasn’t for you Rourke)…but it’s a great deal considering how many problems I used to have when I was shooting, or going in and outside (condensation) or putting on my protection mask. I always wore (non-rx) eye protection in Iraq of course….but if I ever needed to see (dust covered lenses for instance) and my butt was on the line…I knew I could yank them off and see.

I don’t advocate taking on debt if you can help it…but your health (eye health and/or safety) trumps most rules of thumb in my book…many eye surgeons will finance the surgery for you. An even better option though…is to plan on putting it through your cafeteria plan (section 125) in 2011. The new health reform plan takes away a lot of the cafeteria plan benefits we’ve gotten used to, but you can still put 2500 a year (down from over 5k I think) through it which will get you a good (tax free) head start on a permanent eye wear solution.

I agree with Graig! Those are the same issues I was having. Some times I’d have to snatch my glasses off when transitioning environments, so I could see my target, but the Lasik surgery cleared that up. It is pricey, but you can also get one eye at a time done (it called “Blended Vision”). That’s a good way to save some $$$. I had one good eye for a few years.
I’m right eye dominant, so I got my right done first. That way I have good vision with a long gun, and for the hand gun.
