Blog Advertising – Does it bother you?

Font Size » Large | Small

Hello all -

I was contacted by one of my sponsors asking about a larger ad on this site. I emailed them back explaining that I was a little hesitant to allow advertising anywhere besides the current sidebar to the right of the posts.  I told them I would think about it. Honestly – I like the direction my blog is going and do not want to do anything to mess it up. I am fearful that over commercialization will turn prospective readers away.

Now – I realize that there are many other survival & preparedness related blogs that have ALOT more advertising then me. I am not wanting to be just like everyone else.

Anyways – I am considering allowing an ad in a few possible area’s. First – possibly below main title area of site. Next – under page content when a post is opened individually. Lastly – at the very bottom of each page.

Obviously I charge for advertising. Those funds help pay hosting fee’s, equipment purchases for reviews and testing. I see some advantages to more advertising – more equipment purchases which will lead to more reviews/giveaways/etc. I may be a little too sensitive on this issue – but I have put a tremendous amount of time in this blog and continue to do so.

So – below is a simple poll that I would appreciate everyone answering to help me decide.

Thanks – Rourke

I really appreciate the effort you put into your blog, and if advertising is what it takes to help you to continue doing so, I see no reason why not. I myself have found lots of interesting products from the ads on a variety of blogsites. It’s just pop-ups that are annoying :~

Yes, but please, no pop out ads when you hover over words/links. Those are the most annoying.

Absolutely. I hate those pop up ads and would never do them.

    Thanks – Rourke

As mentioned, some sites do have a lot of ads. And, that is OK.

As well, the ‘pop-up’ ads, when they happen, will make me look elsewhere. If I am looking for a product, or see a review that interests me in a product, I look for the ad – then go browse the site.

Your site, the ‘stuff of interest’, and why I come here, take up about 1/2 of the width of my screen. Increasing the width of the ad-space is not a problem. (Running 1280×800 on my laptop). I like the layout you have, but there is space for you to work with.

I would suggest that you set your own computer to 1024 wide x ? and look at the site in full screen mode – then note what space you have. I think it has been some time since most people had monitors that would only go to 800 wide.

    I hope this helps.

Thank you for the sources of information / “education”, and for your time.

Ads are a fine thing to have to help with the expense of running this site or even for making a buck or two.

    Are we not all capitalist?

While I’m not fond of commercials or gaudy rampant advertisement, I respect your need and right to provide support for your efforts which provide your readers with much appreciated information and the ability to connect with like minded folks.

I believe that I’ve gained a lot from your site. My hope is that it doesn’t become cluttered. By all means do what you need to do.

Anything but pop-ups! A man should be rewarded for his work…but no pop-ups please:)

I totally agree – I hate pop ups as well.

Whatever I do it will not be the “in your face” distracting-type.

    Thanks – Rourke

    Kevin –

Whatever I do I would expect it to be unobtrusive and I do not like the cluttered look.

    Thanks – Rourke

I don’t think ads bother anything as long as they are not animated, popping up or take up most of a page.

From the way your sites managed now I really had no doubts. In fact, I set my IPhone to RSS to check it out and now can’t stop it from opening that way. I can switch after but it’s very irritating to start. I prefer the full site, ads and all.
