VIDEO: Common Core education – ridiculous

YouTube

Unless you live in a vacuum you probably have hard of “Common Core” – a new way of teaching math. I did not fully understand it until some time ago when I saw a demonstration on the “new and improved” method.

I could not believe my eyes as I watch a simple math problem which would normally take just a few simple steps become over complicated. Does it work? Sure – you get the same

What if gas suddenly went WAY up?

gasoline-prices-in-california

Gas prices now are about twice what they were in early 2008. People are so used to paying $3.50 for a gallon of gas that it has become the norm. I even had my wife say some about how “cheap” gas was when it dropped locally below $3.00 per gallon last year. Hmmm…..

With the continued unrest in the Middle East and the rest of the world it got me thinking: What if gas climbed

Picture of the Day: Inverter Device List

powergrid

Inverters can be extremely handy items – especially when the power is out. Inverters can be hooked up to a 12V power source and used to run devices which normally would be plugged into household 110V outlet. Inverters can be used with a car battery – even through a cigarette lighter or power port. Connecting directly to one or more batteries(battery bank) is another method of powering the inverter.

Below is a chart that provides

Being frugal……homemade laundry detergent

laundry-detergent (1)

This post was originally published back in 2012 – other than the prices everything is still accurate. – Rourke

Many preppers today are doing so out of fear of inflation and the economy. More and more people are shopping sales, using coupons, and shopping discount centers. Part of my inflation protection system is stocking up on many commonly used household items such as shampoo, body wash, soap, toilet paper, dish detergent, and laundry detergent. I

Random thoughts on rice

rice

The Paleo diet I follow does not afford eating much rice except as a “cheat” food. Regardless – I have stored rice and plan to put back a lot more of it. Rice is super cheap and very versatile. One of my favorite meals is Beef Stew and Rice. Pretty simple and very filling. I open a can of Beef Stew – heat it up and pour it on a bed of rice. Tasty!

Interesting question from reader……

survival

This was sent in from reader – Regina. Feel free to comment with your thoughts.

From time to time, as I talk to other folks, prepping and SHTF topics arise. Usually, most have ideas about survival similar to mine, although once in a while, someone will say it’s foolish to worry about such things. But a couple months ago, I was talking to a 45 year old nephew of mine who is a

What will it take?

Back when I was growing up, we were poor like many other families. I remember the night my mother and father were sitting in front of our only black and white TV, watching President John F. Kennedy make his now famous speech on the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was telling the Soviet Union to take the nuclear missiles out of Cuba. I could tell that something was wrong just

To the Wives, Girlfriends and Other Happy Ladies

survival, supplies, preparedness, 2012, TSHTF, TEOTWAWKI

by Jennifer S. in Reno

Today I woke up and did some house cleaning, I did some laundry and vacuumed the carpets, I harped on the kids to get them to clean their rooms and I changed the cat litter box, I mopped the kitchen floor and made sure all of my dishes were washed. When I was done with that I went to the grocery store. Actually, I went to

Water filtration on a “string”

p1

Here is a very inexpensive water filter experiment I conducted over the past weekend. I was taught this method while serving in the military several years ago and remember it being one of the easiest and most simple methods I know of. All you need for this is two containers and a 1 foot piece of string, cord, or strip of cloth.

Simply place the container of muddy/dirty water at an elevation slightly higher

There just might be hope…..

ku

Recently in my efforts to understand the declining quality of humanity – I have not seen much to be positive about. Most people in the United States continue to have their world revolve around “Dancing with the Stars”, “what can I get that makes me look important”, and a total disregard of what should be truly cherished in life. “Patriotism” for many means nothing and is lacking in much of the population. The unity felt

Agenda: Grinding America Down

agenda

I just got finished watching the documentary Agenda: Grinding America Down for about the 12th or 13th time. Back in February of 2013 I wrote the words below. Thought I would mention it again as it is very enlightening and really gets you thinking. I highly recommend it:

Below is a trailer for a movie/documentary called Agenda: Grinding America Down. It is controversial, but from my perspective very enlightening as to what has been happening

Getting A Spouse To Believe!

by “The Coach”

There are many physical things that we as “Preppers” need and want. All of them we believe we needed or want in order to survive a TEOTWAWKI situation. However, none of them is as important as having a spouse that is understanding, agreeable and works with you toward a common goal with your beliefs on preparing for whatever disaster, nature or manmade, that you are preparing for. Notice that

Remembering the S&W 686 Classic Hunter

smith _ wesson 686

Years ago when guns were a lot cheaper and I had a lot less gray I bought a Smith & Wesson 686 Classic Hunter. I was living in the small town of Franklin, New Hampshire at the time and purchased it from a tiny gun shop in town. I believe I paid $280 for it. Man, those were the days.

If unfamiliar the 686 Classic Hunter is a .357 Magnum revolver with a 6″ barrel.

I have just recently discovered the Foxfire series of books. I guess I am pretty late to the party as so many have told me about them but alas I have arrived.

The Foxfire Books are a compilation of articles written by high school students for a magazine called Foxfire. The project was started back in 1968 in an effort to preserve the knowledge and traditions of the people of Appalachian Mountains(Ruban Gap, NC to

The Obama Administration has a plan to pay off the $17 Trillion in US Debt.

obama

The Current administration has unveiled a plan to settle 100% of the US debt, most notably the $1.28 Trillion owed to China. Sen. Reid (Nevada) & Sen. Pelosi (CA) fully support this revolutionary Debt Elimination Amendment. The plan helps explain why the US Government was so determined to seize the open land used by cattle farmers in Nevada and Texas over the past several years. It also explains why the EPA is working so close

Came across the picture below and corresponding article while on Pinterest the other day. “Pinterest?” you ask? Yes – it is not just for women anymore. There are tons of pretty cool things over there related to preparedness, shooting, gardening, camping, knives, etc. Anyways, I saw the picture of the well organized supply cabinet and it got me thinking – my organization stinks.

Yeah – I admit it I am unorganized. I keep trying and
